Our Mom, Betty Catherine Snyder Pingenot, 93, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012from complications of advanced age at the Lutheran Home for the Aged in Vinton. Our mom was a wonderful person, always busy with her Sunday School nursery class which she taught consecutively for 53 years at the First Baptist Church in Vinton. She also faithfully served in many other areas in church. Mom loved her church and its congregation and more importantly, loved her Lord and Savior. She taught the neighborhood children in her Saturday Bible Club. Mom also enjoyed membership in the Navy Mothers Club, the IB Club, and the Farm Bureau as well as many church ladies groups. Our mom also volunteered at Senior Dining for many years and was honored as “Outstanding Senior Citizen” of Benton County. She was a former house parent at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton. She was known for making jam and jelly and giving jars away at Christmas to those lucky enough to be a recipient. Mom was also famous for her potato rolls which would melt in your mouth. And the whitest wash hung out on the clotheslines!

Mom was born on March 23, 1919 in Chicago, IL to Harry and Lucile Robitschek. Her parents divorced and her grandparents, William and Bertha Snyder raised her in Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated in 1938 from Benjamin Franklin High School. Mom met Joseph Pingenot when her grandfather brought him to their house to lay linoleum. When they met, she asked herself, “who in the world would marry a man with the name like Pingenot”? After dating two years, they eloped to Dubuque, IA on January 3, 1940. For their wedding dinner, they ate bologna sandwiches while riding along Highway 20 on the way home from Dubuque.

Surviving are her children, Thomas (wife Eunice) of Vinton, son David (wife Alleene) of California, and daughter Joann (husband Ro) Portis of Lynwood, IL. Also surviving are her 6 grandsons, Mark Pingenot (wife Carrie), Aaron Pingenot, Joseph Pingenot (wife Shannon), James Pingenot (wife Charissa) and Jesse Pingenot, and Antwon Portis (wife Amanda). Her great-grandchildren, Andrew Pingenot, Madeline Pingenot, Zach Pingenot, Auhna Portis, Aiden Portis, and Savannah Portis. Also survived by her sister, Marion Wilkerson of Tulsa, OK. Proceeded in death by her husband Joe in November, 1993, her grandson Charles Portis in August, 2008, and her sister Sylvia in January, 2008.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Vinton with Rev. Zach Zajicek officiating. Interment will folllow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. www.phillipsfuneralhomes.com

JW May 1, 2012, 10:55 am Now Grandma Betty is with her Lord and Saviour. If I could come home, I\'d sing \"Jesus Loves Me\". Only God would know the answer to how many of us learned to sing that song from her. She was \"Grandma Betty\" before a marriage truly made her a relative.
DC May 1, 2012, 12:57 pm Many of us grew up with Betty as our \"First\" teacher. We also sent our children to be in the loving arms of Betty too. She taught us about the love of Jesus, the songs we sang, and I can also remember the love she gave to all the children that passed through her classes. Betty was a huge part of my life growing up and have many fond memories to cherish of her.

JaMT May 1, 2012, 10:32 pm Just learned a few minutes ago of your mother\'s passing. So sorry but know that she will be happy in Heaven with her Savior. We certainly remember her faithfulness to her church and teaching the children during the 16 years we lived there. One of her favorite things to say was \"Keep on keeping on\" and that\'s what she did. She comes to our minds frequently with her words of wisdom. God bless you all during this time of sorrow.
