Vernon C. Wieditz, 82, died Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following a short battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, June 19, 2010 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Garrison with Rev. Mark Leckband officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Geo. G. Hardinger American Legion Post #475 of Garrison. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton from 4 to 7 PM on Friday. A memorial Fund has been established.
Vernon was born February 26, 1928 in Eden Township of Benton County to Carl and Mary (Rinderknecht) Wieditz and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1945. During the Korean Conflict he served his nation in the U.S. Army.
On November 13, 1960 he was united in marriage to Lois Schellhase at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Vernon's greatest love was farming and raising livestock. His tractor of choice was a John Deere and he was always known as a "hard worker". He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Lois of Vinton; his daughters, Dawn (Trent) Packingham of Vinton, and Ann (Mark) Schmelzer of Vinton; his brother, Wayne Wieditz of Vinton; his sister, Lucille (Carlos) Phillis of Burbank, CA; his grandchildren, Pam Packingham, Toni Packingham, Alex Schmelzer and Brock Schmelzer, all of Vinton; his sisters-in-law, Ruth Wieditz and Frances Wieditz, both of Vinton and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Walter and Richard Wieditz, and his sister, Marcella Seboldt.
The family would like to thank the Vinton Family Medical Clinic, Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton Lutheran Home, St. Luke's Hospice, Rev. Mark Leckband and Rev. Clarke Frederick for the wonderful care given to Vernon throughout his illness.
