VINTON – Donald K. “Don” Holmes, 81, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton following a long illness.

A Celebration of Life for Don will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the home of Jeff and Angie Holmes, 705 1st Avenue, Vinton. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Vinton Presbyterian Church with Gene Spicer, CLP, officiating. Inurnment with military rites will be held in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo at a later date.

Don was born July 17, 1931, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the youngest of four sons of H. Roy and Amy (Hanna) Holmes. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College High School in 1949, and after attending Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) in Cedar Falls and participating on the wrestling team that went on to win the 1950 National Championship, he left school in 1950 to join the U.S. Navy.

He married Barbara Meewes on December 16, 1951, in Waterloo, and she followed him to Navy assignments in Philadelphia and Newport, RI. He returned to ISTC in 1953 and graduated in May of 1957 with a degree in science and secondary education.

He started teaching in Manchester in 1957, just three months after their son, Jeffory, was born. Don taught biology and general science at Manchester High School while serving as an assistant coach in football and wrestling.

In 1961, the family moved to Vinton where Don began a 33-year run as a member of the Vinton (and later, Vinton-Shellsburg) faculty. Over those years he taught everything from general science to world geography to personal economics. He is probably best remembered for teaching biology and physiology, as well as driver’s education, which he taught for 38 summers.

Don was the head wrestling coach at Vinton from 1961 to 1973. He led the Vikings to the program’s only WaMaC wrestling championship in 1972. His teams won three sectional championships (1965, 1971 and 1972), and six invitational tournament championships, both more than any other coach in program history. His 61 dual-meet victories rank him second all-time behind only his nephew, Jeff Frost. Don was in the first class of inductees to the Viking Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Don was a wrestling official for nearly three decades. He worked his first of 19 straight Iowa State High School state tournaments in 1975 and retired from officiating in 1993. Additionally, he officiated numerous college meets over the years at the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. In both 1977 and 1978, he was chosen to officiate the NCAA Division II National Championships at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. He also worked at the scoring tables of the 1991, 1995 and 2001 NCAA Division I tournaments in Iowa City and the 1997 meet in Cedar Falls. Don was elected to the Iowa High School Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame in 1988.

Don was an avid golfer, and he and Barbara were long-time members of the Vinton Country Club. He also enjoyed fishing, his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and his UNI Panthers. He was a joker and a poet, and he was devoted to his family and friends, especially in later years to his “Best Buddy,” his grandson, Sage.

He took great pride in every athlete and student he ever encountered. While he was always pleased with their accomplishments on the mat or in the classroom, he took even more pride in the people they went on to be – doctors, lawyers, ministers, community leaders, husbands, wives and parents. Every student and athlete was equal in his eyes. And he always took a secret pride that many of his former athletes and students still called him “Coach” or “Mr. Holmes” decades after they’d had him in school.

Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, of Vinton; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Angela Holmes, and his beloved grandson, Sage, all of Vinton; his brother, Glenn (Freddie) Holmes of Cedar Falls; numerous nieces and nephews across the country; and countless friends whose lives he had touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Dale and Wayne Holmes; and his niece, Judy Holmes Mortenson.

A memorial fund has been established.

Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home is caring for Don and his family. Condolences may be left at www.vsrfh.com

PS March 28, 2013, 7:28 am Coach touched many lives in many different ways. May he rest in peace.
LB March 27, 2013, 1:43 pm Coach, I’m sad to see that you have passed. I remember you well as my biology teacher and refereeing many of my wrestling matches. Though I still don’t think eating only lettuce and brown sugar is the best way to cut-weight. Nothing against Mr. Huelman, but I was disappointed when I found I didn’t get you as my Driver’s Ed instructor. You were a very good man. May God bless you and watch over your family.
KS March 26, 2013, 11:37 pm I knew Don in his later years, what an great man, so personable to our patients as he drove them in the Virginia Gay Van, he made an appointment at the hospital almost enjoyable. He deserves such peace now. What a wonderful tribute to Don,as you read all the kind comments, he will never be forgotten, God\'s blessings to the Holmes family.
RP March 26, 2013, 10:57 am Coach Holmes taught me that hard work and dedication will pay off. I had the privilege to have him as my wrestling coach all 4 years of high school, win or lose he was always proud of you. Not only was I fortunate to have him as a coach but our children had the good fortune to have him as a teacher. I would like to say Thank you to Barb and Jeff Holmes for all of the dedication and devotion that \"Coach Holmes\" gave to our school, the community and all those he came into contact with. The good Lord broke the mold with him. God Bless
JB March 26, 2013, 10:03 am Coach Holmes was a great mentor to me. The lessons that I learned on the wrestling mat have served me well in all aspects of my life. The greatest of them all is that there are no shortcuts. God Bless Coach Holmes and all of the lives he touched.
MB March 26, 2013, 1:22 am What a wonderful tribute. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May he rest in peace.
K&RH March 25, 2013, 9:24 pm My sympathy to Don\'s family. I think back to those many summers teaching Driver Education with Don and all the stories and humor that we shared with this sometimes nerve-racking job here in Vinton. He was missed when he retired and we will miss him more now. Rest in peace Don. Ken Huelman

LW March 25, 2013, 2:49 pm Mr Holmes was one of my favorite teachers and I\'m saddened to hear that he has passed away. Like Tom, one of my most memorable memories of Mr Holmes was of him looking at the ceiling while addressing the class so that no one would think he was singling anybody out by making eye contact with anyone. That and him calling us all \"offspring\", because he had several of our parents in class as well (my dad had him, too).
BW March 25, 2013, 2:08 pm Mr. Holmes was one of the main influences in me wanting to go into the education profession. He was truly a one of a kind teacher, and an even better man.
JW March 25, 2013, 1:43 pm I think Don Holmes touched every student he had. I was privileged to have Mr. Holmes for Biology and for Driver Ed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
jt March 25, 2013, 10:53 am I remember my first impression of Don Holmes as I met him my first summer of teaching in this district. He was very accepting of a young teacher new to the school, carried on a conversation like he had known me for years, always made me and everyone around him feel very comfortable. Rest in peace, Don.
TP March 25, 2013, 9:31 am My thoughts and prayers are with the family in your time of grief. Mr. Holmes was most memorable to me and I cover my eyes or look up to the ceiling when I address a group I am leading so I purposefully don\'t make eye contact, just like he did when he spoke to us and didn\'t want to single out a student or two. I also purchased a set of \"beauty rings\" from him for my Pontiac as he said he didn\'t need them on his Pontiac Le Mans any longer. God be with him and with you all in this time.
JU March 24, 2013, 11:35 pm My condolences to the family. Coach Holmes was a great guy.

AE March 24, 2013, 8:40 pm I\'m sending my thoughts and prayers out to the Holmes family.
Mr. Holmes was the greatest drivers ed. and biology teachers a person could ever have. I can still hear his voice in the hallway of the old high school \"that\'s how you catch mono\" that little saying will always bring a smile to my face! Rest in peace Mr. Holmes, you may be gone but you will never be forgotten!
TOB March 24, 2013, 8:03 pm My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Mr. Holmes was the greatest drivers ed instructor! I credit him with teaching me how to change a tire and to be able to stay in control on a gravel road!!! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him!! God Bless!
VB March 24, 2013, 8:02 pm Beautifully written for a memorable man.
