VAN HORNE:
Roy W. Kerkman, 97, died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013 at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Van Horne with Pastor David Lingard officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery in Newhall. Visitation will be held at the church in Van Horne from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. A memorial fund has been established.

Roy was born July 29, 1915 in Van Horne to Ervin and Bertha (Meyer) Kerkman.

He was baptized on September 12, 1915 and confirmed on May 19, 1929 at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Van Horne.

On November 4, 1936 he was united in marriage to Orpha Zeman at the Parish Hall in Chelsea. The couple farmed and raised their family where Roy was born. They enjoyed membership in several square dancing clubs during their marriage. In 1981 they moved to Van Horne where Roy operated a small engine repair business.

Roy enjoyed bowling and served as a trustee at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church for several years.

He is survived by three daughters, Anita (Ralph) Stimson of Marion, Janet (Boyd) Bigelow of Center, CO and Marlys Kerkman of Buckhorn, Ontario; his son, Galen (Linda) Kerkman of Van Horne; his grandchildren, Karie (Tyrone) Meyer of Marion, Kent Stimson of Kansas City, MO, Jason Kerkman of Cedar Rapids, and Slade, Dillon, Andrew, Justice, and Desiree Kerkman, all of Van Horne; his great grandchildren, Dan, Amanda, and Michael Meyer and his great-great grandchildren, Madison, Gracie and Hayden Meyer.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Orpha in 2003; his son-in-law, Michael Gains; his sisters, Francis Brecht and Gladys Lint; and his brother, Marvin Kerkman.
