To the Editor: Support Parbs for Supervisor- Please vote November 5th
Shelley Parbs is running for Benton County Supervisor and is the best candidate for the position.
Shelley is a natural leader, willing to listen to your concerns and be fair to the citizens of Benton County. She has the educational degree in business and administration but also the experience as well.
It is also an opportunity to get a woman on board; women are good at facilitating connections between people, resources, and relationships that are needed in any business situation.
My morning alarm clock...it never needs set
This morning, I had my unofficial resident cardiologist check my heart.
The "check-up" goes something like this:
*Cue light, gentle music, picture a lady sleeping peacefully in bed with visions of butterflies gently fluttering over a flower bed, and a smile on her face*
From out of nowhere the alarm, set at full volume, suddenly blares music.
Why Vinton should have tobacco-free parks
By Shania Heckmann, VSHS Reality Check
I am writing this to inform you that I believe Vinton and the surrounding areas should have tobacco free parks. There are many reasons behind me saying that as well. Think about the health of the people that are smoking in the first place, but then think about who else would be at a park. Kids! Babies and plenty of kids should not be taking in the smoke and chemicals that are blown out form the smoker’s breath.

By Marlyn and Ann Jorgensen
To all citizens of Benton county:
On November 5th we elect a new member for the Board of Supervisors and we hope you agree with us that Todd Wiley is the best candidate for the job. We keep hearing about all the things that are wrong with our government yet only a small percent of us take the time to vote.
Wisdom, faith, humility and the World Series wisdom of Casey Stengel
Today’s World Series Week column is a lesson in humility, faith and wisdom. Or more specifically, the wisdom of humble faith.
First, the words of wisdom: "If we're going to win the pennant, we've got to start thinking we're not as smart as we think we are."
In the spring of 1953 – after four straight World Championships with the New York Yankees – something that manager Casey Stengel saw in his team of superstars inspired one of his most startling strange phrases – and he uttered many of those uniquely entertaining Stengelism.
Remembering the impact of baseball's Dummy Hoy
Today's World Series week column is especially for the young men and women of Vinton whose games bring their parents to the local ball diamonds, whether its Park and Rec league, the USSSA teams that play at Marvin Lindsey Field, or the high school baseball and softball teams.
All of you young players are part of a tradition of baseball that has lasted nearly 150 years.
The World Series and the Holtzman legacy
Most baseball fans love the game because someone introduced them to it when they were young.
For me, it was may father, a baseball fan (although not a player).
And my second grade teacher.
I know this because that many years ago, I was in the second grade, and my teacher, Mrs. Holtzman, had the same last name as one of the members of the Oakland A’s.
Sherry, Jackie and Candy: Girls names among the Boys of Summer
The World Series begins on Wednesday, and as I wrote this on Saturday night, watching the Boston Red Sox earn the right to play against the St. Louis Cardinals again this year, it occurs to me that this would be a good time to share some of my favorite baseball stories.
Today's theme: "The girls' names among the 'Boys of Summer.
A Challenge to The Other Guys
Two months ago, the phone rang.
“I am calling about your job opening for an editor,” said the man on the other line, a journalist from the Green Bay area.
You have the wrong number, I replied.
I knew right away why he was calling.
The Other Guys were looking for someone to do the job I used to do for them.
For those of you unfamiliar with Vinton or Vinton Today, let me explain my history with The Other Guys.
