First rule of winter driving safety: DON'T!

(Editor's Note: The following op-ed piece is brought to you again this year by the car insurance industry, law enforcement, ambulance services and towing companies from any place where winter weather has produced driving hazards -- especially humans.) I once had the enlightening experience of working with a teenage girl who had already wrecked her car two or three times.

The wonderful world wide web

As I glance across the top of my screen, I see that I have 10 screens open. I am waiting for a picture to download, and I started thinking about what I'd really like for Christmas. This thought was triggered by another email that came in this morning. Besides the beautiful picture of a kitchen with floor to ceiling cupboards...I started looking at the Ancestry.

Watershed address: Why to understand where water goes after the rain

It’s a sultry July night in Muscatine County – and the fish are biting! But John can’t decide whether to keep or throw back the scrappy channel cat he just caught under a snag in the Cedar River. For some reason, he keeps thinking of the little creek he crossed on a recent visit to his brother up near Osage.

Pastor's Blog - Post Thanksgiving

Part I It's 1:25 pm on November 26, 2012, and the kitchen is finally cleaned up.  The left overs are all packaged up after a trip to the grocery store this morning to buy more storage containers.  A double batch of turkey and rice soup was made, pronounced "good," and put in the freezer for winter suppers.   There were only three of us for the Thanksgiving meal, but we had enough to feed fifteen people.

Are there too many college bowl games?

I come from the era when there were less than 10 bowl games. Yes, less than 10. The first year I really remember paying that much attention to the bowls was in the 1965-66 season. You had the four New Year’ Day games: Sugar, Cotton, Rose and Orange. Then, you had five lesser bowls that were played in the days before Jan.

The Legend of the Face of Cedar Rock... help write it!

This rock is a naturally-occuring phenomenon.... or is it? Legends began when people many years ago saw something unusual and tried to find a historical explanation.  While I am sure this stone is a naturally-occuring  phenomenon, it would be fun to think of what stories it might inspire. If you have any ideas, feel free to share them in the comments section!.

Puppy Love

The term "puppy love" brings about the vision of young kids in love, usually for the first time, who see their lives together with that special someone as a "til death do us part" possibility. I, on the other hand, have seen what TRUE puppy love is. On Thanksgiving we took off for the day, chaining our usual inside dog, outside, since no one would be home to let her outside as needed.

Black Friday? Bah Humbug!

One thing I hate to do is shop. I know, it's not the stereotypical thing for a woman to say, but I do. I've never understood the pleasure in roaming around aisle after aisle of things I don't want or need. I'm not even a huge web surfer. I get online, do what I need to do, and get off...of course, unless I get into Facebook, then I don't know where the time goes! One of the gals I know, said something like this.

Many reasons to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week

Throughout the week, people from all over the world have been celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week. With 37,000 activities planned, and directly engaging more than seven million people, the leaders of 117 countries are convinced and see value in what entrepreneurs bring to a community. Being an entrepreneur is fun. It’s challenging and can be very rewarding, however, there are a lot of associated risks.

What's in a name? Why our Mr. X is not the Mr. X of any other state

“Please do not make me take legal action.” We received this menacing message via our Vinton Today comment page this week from a man I will call MR. X. MR. X saw his name in Vinton Today, and did not like what he read. I do not blame him. Another man with a virtually identical name was sentenced to many years in jail for doing something incredibly horrible.
