Letter to the Editor: Thankful to be American
As Thanksgiving day approaches I feel certain blessings.
One and the most important - I have been born an American. Where I am not subject to a system that restricts how far I can go. I am only restricted by my ambition, initiative, and guts. As many Mothers tell their children, "You can be President of the USA.
The grandfatherly 'crown'
The baby was sitting on her grandfather’s lap, with Grandma sitting next to them. She sat there contentedly for a while, but then she looked down and saw that it was Grandma’s hand she was holding – not Grandpa’s.
“Uh-huh!” said the baby as she pushed away Grandma’s hand.
Pledge of Allegiance
While working on our Veteran Salute, I ran across this piece and thought, "Oh the FUN of the internet!"
I love listening to the "old" guys and gals and their take on life in general. But throw in a bit of patriotism and I'm a gonner!
This is a piece by Red Skeleton, whom I didn't even know existed until a few years ago.
Letter to the Editor: Let voters have say on Conservation funding
Let the voters decide! Let the voters decide! That was the mantra of the campaign season. Well, 63% of the voters decided to create a Natural Resources & Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund but Branstad, who is not governor, yet, and Rep. Kraig Paulsen, who is not Speaker of the House, yet, has already decided that the will of the people will not be funded, thus thwarting the majoritys wishes.
Letter to the Editor: Brad Zaun offers better way in Congress
The year 2007, Democrats take over Congress. The House elects
Nancy Pelosi Speaker. In her opening remarks she states that there
will be no more deficit spending. Since that time the deficit will
grow to 17 Trillion Dollars, which is equal more or less to the GNP of
the United States.
That is: equal to the total production of goods
and services in this country in one year.
A vote for the question that raises countless more questions
I wish that people who write government documents would get in the habit of putting legal questions in a way that is more easy to understand.
For example: The Constitutional Convention question on the Iowa ballot.
On the ballot – as required by law – the question reads:
“Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution, and propose amendments to the same?”
That question raises many more questions than most voters could answer.
Monday night philosophizing
Whether it’s a quirk or a benefit, a curse or a blessing, I often find myself thinking about things that would never occur to anyone else.
When I got my first job at a newspaper, I spent a lot of time about the guy who left the vacancy that became my opportunity.
I don’t mean the man I replaced at the office in downtown Independence.
Why it may be time to put the car in 'R'
Editor:
Have the radicals of the 60’s and their offspring finally won? We have a leadership that is comfortable in governing against the will of the majority of the citizenry. Is this the direction we were promised?

Letter to the Editor: Why replace judges who make own laws on marriage
Memo to R.S.: This is not an ouster, but a retention vote. What happens if they are not retained? --- someone else gets appointed. If they legislate from the bench they should not be retained as well. The people through their elected Legislators have the right and the duty to place limits on human behavior.
