Why it may be time to put the car in 'R'

Editor:             Have the radicals of the 60’s and their offspring finally won?  We have a leadership that is comfortable in governing against the will of the majority of the citizenry.  Is this the direction we were promised? Jerry Carlson, Landowner Editor Emeritus -- Landowner newsletter August 26, 2010   “Since 2007 multiple government and Federal Reserve bailouts have ballooned the U.

Letter to the Editor: Why replace judges who make own laws on marriage

Memo to R.S.:  This is not an ouster, but a retention vote.  What happens if they are not retained? --- someone else gets appointed.  If they legislate from the bench they should not be retained as well.  The people through their elected Legislators have the right and the duty to place limits on human behavior.

Letter to the Editor: Vote against fear & hate on judicial retention issue

To The Editor, Have those who are advocating the ouster of three Supreme Court Justices really thought through what happens if they are successful.  How does this group plan to make sure that the replacement judges would rule differently?  Do we want a single-issue disagreement destroy our judiciary? This is not about judicial over-reach or judges usurping the right of the people.

Letter to the Editor: Support Zaun for Congress

While Brad Zaun was mayor of Urbandale, the city enjoyed the lowest tax rates in the metro area because of Zaun's leadership. Zaun cleared the way for businesses to grow and expand, growing the tax base and helping Urbandale prosper. That same kind of energy is badly needed in Washington, D.C., where every day there seems to be another job-killing proposal.

New junk mail

Whatever the technology, people will try to find a way to use it to promote their products or business at as little cost to them as possible. Especially if it's possible to do so for free. I rejected a comment about Halloween today. It was from a woman who said she loves this time of year and that she gets all her stuff from a certain holiday web site.

The joys of junior journalism for the not-so junior journalist

Everyone once in a while,  you hear an old song that is new to you, and it brings perspective to your life. Like "Partners, Brothers and Friends." The song is from 1985, and a band with a strange name: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. (Hear that song HERE) The song is a fun and kinda funny reflection on being in the music business, and the tough times the band had survived over its previous 20 years together.

Panel discussion demonstrates disappointing limitations of modern media

What I learned on a Press Panel: I learned that radio guys are in the business for a reason, they love to talk, if you want a guy that loves to talk, look there. I already knew that from an earlier experience we had in reporting.  We were sharing the press box at a football came and I simply started at the two guys reporting on the game.

The Greatest Generation we never knew, at least not well enough

I was standing at the door of St. Elizabeth Church in Hiawatha, taking photos as the Honor Flight staff lined the hallway and applauded the World War II veterans leaving their orientation. The vets -- 99 of them on this flight-- will go to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, to see the World War II Memorial. I took photos as several of the veterans as they left the meeting, trying to capture their faces as well as the applauding hands of the Honor Flight volunteers.

Finally: Time to put Total Dale Earnhardt policy to work in Iraq

Finally, seven years after George W. Bush told the world that the war in Iraq would start “at the time and the place of our choosing,” America now has the chance to do what I wrote in March of 2003 that we should do to bring long-term peace and prosperity to Iraq, and the rest of the Middle East. But I cannot take credit for the idea.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, We have been hammered by the press and many elected leaders about the consequences of allowing the so called "Bush Tax Cuts" to expire. This Government in the last 18 months has dramatically increased spending, while revenues have either decreased or remained the same. Thus far for each dollar government spends they are borrowing 42 cents! Our present debt load is $500,000 per U.
