Today marks the 90th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the amendment that allows women to vote.
The whole idea that women had to prove they had enough brains to vote, seems pretty lame.
The days of equality are far from arriving in our neighborhoods.
I know as women it's so easy to point out all the ways that life isn't equal for us.
There is the lack of equality in paychecks. It doesn't matter if you keep books or create a computer, it's all work. It shouldn't matter if you are John or Jane, the check should be the same. .
Is the bookkeeper less important to a boss who needs someone to figure out a complicated computer? Of course not, but we have the idea that if someone knows how to do something we don't they are worth more.
Now, switch jobs let the guy who creates computers, balance the books, and soon you see the value of someone talented with the numbers.
The same is true in life.
We have disabled folks that we look down on, simply because maybe they can't walk as good as we can. Put yourself in a wheelchair and see how quickly you have an appreciation for the person in the chair.
Our elderly, are ignored and treated as second class because they've already been here and done this, but we never ask them to share their wisdom with us.
Even our children are considered a "burden" and we cheer when it's time for them to head off to school so that we don't have to be with them all day long.
As much as I like to think I am fair to everyone in everthing, when you stop to really think about it, how many of us are really able to treat everyone the same?
Equality. There really isn't such a thing.
