I would like to address my remarks to the Big Box Store Customer with whom I had the misfortune of crossing paths.

Dear Costumer,

Last week I purchased a number of boxes of Christmas lights. On Tuesday I pulled out the tree and the boxes of new lights. The first box I opened reeked of mice. I unraveled them and plugged them in; only a quarter of the strand worked. Of the six boxes of new lights two of them reeked of mice and most of the lights did not work.

I have a hard time believing that you had the nerve to purchase new lights, painstakingly rewrap your old ones, shove them in the box, and take the time to return to the store and stand in line for a refund!! Now you are asking me, how I know that they were pre-owned lights. The reek of mice, the lack of paper work/instructions and extra light bulbs in the box, the wrong color of twist tie, and the ends plugged together were pretty good indications however, that is not what convinced me of your licentious deed. No, it was the white Christmas tree flock that was still attached to the wires that actually gave it away.

Did you think that you were fleecing the Big Box Store? Did you feel entitled because the Big Box Store makes big money? Did you think that no one would notice your dishonest behavior? Did you think you weren’t hurting anyone?
You are personally responsible for derailing my day because I had to return the lights to the store where I purchased them in Cedar Rapids before I could continue with setting up the Christmas tree. You are responsible for the wasted time and gas that it took in order to return them because I live in VINTON. You and everyone else who has done this and similar pernicious deeds are responsible for contributing to the cancer of our society that is dishonesty and disregard for others. This experience has put a serious damper on my holiday spirit and left me wondering how anyone could stoop to new levels of debasement and go through so much trouble to not spend $2.30 per box of lights.
I hope that if you ever find yourself on the receiving end of someone else’s dishonesty that you will consider your actions and that the experience will make you a better person.

No thanks for the Ba humbug!

Stephonie K. Williams

I December 16, 2010, 4:23 pm I must share this story with you Stephonie. My wife works at a factory in Cedar Rapids, a co-worker of hers was on her way back to her car at the Wal-Mart parking lot when a lady tipped over her shopping cart. Help, of course she did. While she was helping this gal reload her shopping cart another was taking her belongings and her purse at her own car. Chin-up, there\'s a lot of very good people out there like yourself.
Happy that Holiday
S December 17, 2010, 1:35 pm I guess my first thought to this is~ if you had bought from local retailers you wouldn\'t have had so far to go to return them. Vinton has many stores with Christmas lights, but you choose to drive to Cedar Rapids twice. I\'m sure Vinton would loved to have had your business. I don\'t feel real sorry for you.
H December 17, 2010, 3:59 pm Perhaps you should save your money for those $10 words you are throwing around. A person who is returning lights for $2.30 probably doesn\'t have the vocabulary to understand words like \"pernicious\" and \"debasement.\" While I no doubt understand your frustration at the matter, it\'s apparent you are writing this letter to provide attention to yourself and make yourself feel important. Not to mention the fact you wrote a Vinton news source to gripe about a Cedar Rapids shopping experience. Take your complaint to Cedar Rapids.
E December 17, 2010, 4:34 pm Kids, please remember, http://www.vintoniowa.org/articles/News/article101661.html check it out!
S December 17, 2010, 11:42 pm I appreciate the comments about shopping in Vinton stores before going to CR. Actually, I did. I went to multiple stores trying to find the lights that I wanted and would match my existing sets of lights. No one had them. I really do prefer to shop at home but sometimes what you need just can\'t be found here. I will continue to look to local stores before making the trip elsewhere.

Idbedan, Thank you for that! My faith in humanity has been restored. I very much appreciate your comment.
fc December 18, 2010, 1:41 am I can\'t believe some of the comments on this! I think most people are missing the point. So the writer has a good vocabulary and shops out of town once in a while--like we all do, admit it. That is totally beside the point. The point is dishonest people hurt our society, no matter what city you shop in. I totally agree with the author. This kind of behavior is deplorable (big word, but I hope you get it).
I December 18, 2010, 11:03 am Your Welcome
as December 18, 2010, 11:48 am Stephonie - I too try to shop locally but I also can identify with you in not finding what I want in town. Also, some of us have to commute to CR for our jobs and it may be easier to stop and shop. Some people aren\'t getting your point ---- and frankly, I appreciate the \"$10 words\" as it shows you are intelligent and certainly do not deserve the wrath you are receiving - I truly hope you have a happy holiday.
D|CL July 8, 2011, 11:39 pm I really liked your blog! It helped me a lot. I\'m also sharing this christmas lights that we have. This would surely be of great help to you.
