Letter to the Editor: Let's be Positive

Dear Editor,

As we celebrate independence and freedom at this time of year, let's take a moment to remember all the positive things that have happened in the last 18 months.

- A $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill was signed, and would not have been possible without bipartisan support. Among other things, this replaces every lead pipe in the country, a huge advance. Improvements to roads, bridges, broadband access and more means blue and white collar jobs created by private industry across the country.

- $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, including billions to help schools at every level reopen, one enormous improvement from denying that there was even a problem with COVID.

- $20 billion COVID vaccination program. Under the previous administration, with the official position of denying COVID was a problem, just 1% of the population was vaccinated. Today at least 74% of the population has had at least one shot.

- Expanded access to health care for 5 million Americans

- Jobless claims are the lowest since 1969 at about 3.6%. Under the previous administration, it averaged 6.3%, with a high of 14.7%.

It's also worth noting that America has once again adopted an official policy of "science is real" and is no longer the laughing stock of the world regarding climate change, COVID, and many other issues.

DC July 13, 2022, 8:33 pm Well Mr. Bopp Unlike the rest of the folks that only comment against right leaning posts, you write your beliefs on an original post. Kudos for that. I don't agree with all you say, but at least you aren't just the Siskel & Ebert type.

These people are not cultists, and they are not stupid. They are our friends and neighbors. Please stop characterizing them derisively and making it personal. I've spoken to the editor a couple of times about posts that violate the rules, and asked her not to put them online, but so far she has ignored me completely. "Disagree politely with ideas shared, don't make it personal Vinton Today has the right to refuse any comments that are deemed inappropriate"

GB July 5, 2022, 2:23 pm A 1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill in which less than 10% of the money actually went to infrastructure. Covid relief? Tons of that has gone unspent on Covid relief and now cities and towns across this country are scrambling to reallocate that money for other projects. When government spends that kind of money, it leads to inflation. This is why the cost of everything costs more now. Except for fuel, that's a whole other issue along with overdose deaths nearly doubling in this country from Fentanyl laced drugs flowing across our southern border. Biden has done a great job of jacking everything up! I'm not sure how many more accomplishments we can stand as a sovereign country..
