Dear Editor,

Donald Trump has admitted that he did not know anything about NATO before taking office. Story HERE.

Think about that for a moment. Most people have at least a working knowledge of NATO and for someone so intelligent as Trump, who claims with a supposed intelligence gene pool from a now deceased MIT professor uncle, one would assume that he would know something about NATO. But what is really concerning as a candidate and then leader of world he did not educate himself on anything relating to governing. In true Trump fashion he went from not knowing what NATO is to being an expert in seconds flat and as he would say, "no one knows more about NATO than he does."

But alas here it is: A SHORT HISTORY OF NATO https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/declassified_139339.htt

It is often said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded in response to the threat posed by the Soviet Union. This is only partially true. In fact, the Alliance's creation was part of a broader effort to serve three purposes: deterring Soviet expansionism, forbidding the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through a strong North American presence on the continent, and encouraging European political integration.

The aftermath of World War II saw much of Europe devastated in a way that is now difficult to envision. Approximately 36.5 million Europeans had died in the conflict, 19 million of them civilians. Refugee camps and rationing dominated daily life. In some areas, infant mortality rates were one in four. Millions of orphans wandered the burnt-out shells of former metropolises. In the German city of Hamburg alone, half a million people were homeless.

In addition, Communists aided by the Soviet Union were threatening elected governments across Europe. In February 1948, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, with covert backing from the Soviet Union, overthrew the democratically elected government in that country. Then, in reaction to the democratic consolidation of West Germany, the Soviets blockaded Allied-controlled West Berlin in a bid to consolidate their hold on the German capital. The heroism of the Berlin Airlift provided future Allies with some solace, but privation remained a grave threat to freedom and stability.
Article 5 "The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

The NATO alliance was signed on April 9,1949 by 12 European and North American countries. NATO has been in force for 75 years and has grown to total of 32 countries. At its inception, America was considered the leader of the free world and our nation readily accepted that role. As a collective, NATO came together with compassion and empathy for people in Europe who bore the enormous burden of a World War. America has not even considered shirking from this responsibility until Trump.

On the evening of 12 September 2001, NATO invoked the principle of Article 5 for the first time in its history. https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/declassified_137121.htm NATO countries; Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Norway provided troops to fight in the War on Terror which resulted in 1,468 aggregate deaths.

Instead of educating himself on the history and importance of NATO, Trump went headlong onto the world's stage and has not only made a spectacle of himself and embarrassment to the US but created dangerous uncertainty with our allies. He refuses to understand the funding mechanisms of NATO. Earlier Trump stated that if a NATO country had not paid his perception of a bill that if Putin would invade that country Trump would tell Putin to do whatever the hell Putin wanted to do without defending that country.

Trump has floated the idea that if he is elected again that America's role in NATO might be reduced or eliminated altogether. American leadership at NATO's inception through today believe that it is in America's interest to support our allies to ensure the future safety of the free world because if all stand together, we all reap the rewards containing bad actors such as Putin from invading the NATO countries. The uncertainty Trump brings to NATO should not only concern NATO nations but concern Americans who understand the importance of NATO as a vital alliance for the world.

I'm certain IF Trump would read your illustrious piece, he'd be worried.
Hope you know sarcasm when you see it!!!
GB July 21, 2024, 7:00 pm RS,
I think you missed the point Trump was trying to make. Some of the countries in NATO have not been paying their share of the agreed GDP towards the alliance. When they don't, America always picks up the tab. I do not believe Trump has ever been serious about pulling out of NATO. I do believe he was serious about members not paying their share of the bill.
Your opinion was interesting until you threw Trump in the mix. Of course, you did. What do you suggest our President do when members fail to contribute to something and yet expect all the benefits from being a member? I would like to know how you would suggest fixing that problem. That is American tax dollars and in case you do not know, the failed foreign policies of this administration is running out of tax dollars which is other people's money.
RS July 21, 2024, 9:51 pm As with anything with Trump, he does not have the ability to understand detailed processes. If it isn’t in bullet points with pictures he cannot digest complex information. Unlike Trump, I am not going to assert to know how funding for NATO is determined.

I do know the 2% GDP is an aspirational goal not a requirement because each of the 32 countries have diverse economies with differing budgetary processes. Below is a table of the percentages of GDP of the countries.

Let’s say we do what Trump suggests. That no country not having 2% GDP doesn’t deserve our support through Article 5 even if America has agreed to do so. If let’s say Putin invades one or more of those under 2%, one way to start down the road of WWIII would be if the United States decided not to fund support for that country.

Is it in the U.S. interest to let Putin invade Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, or Denmark? Reminds me of appeasement in Europe of Hitler during WWII. Pretty soon half or more is under Russian rule. Is that in America’s interest?

Also note Germany’s percentage compared to the United States. With a vast population difference between our two countries, Germany pays the same percentage as the U.S. If any country should be mad, I think it would be them.

DL July 22, 2024, 2:16 pm There is no "tab" for The United States to pick up, if a country doesn't meet the 2% towards Defence Spending. Each country has an amount of money that their economy produces every year. If things are going good, that number increases every year. If it goes down, for more than one two consecutive reporting periods, the country is in a recession. The amount of money that a country's economy creates, is the number that is used to find the amount of money they need to spend on their Defense Department. If a certain country has a GDP
of $10 Billion in a certain year, it means that they need to spend $200 million (2% of GDP) on their Defense Department the next year, to comply with NATO's requirement. If a country fails to spend that much on their defense, it doesn't mean any other country owes more! It simply means that the country didn't build their own military as much as NATO would like. There are no bills paid to NATO. The famous 2%, is just the amount that a country "should" spend on their military. If 10 of the 32 countries don't spend that much on their military, nobody gets a bill to help make up the difference. It doesn't hurt our country, on bit, if another NATO country doesn't spend enough on their military. It only hurts that country's military.
JS July 22, 2024, 4:19 pm NATO has relyed on our nuke umbrella for decades. time to pay up. NATO is not a concern of the average citizen anyway. pick another subject to be wrong on. good grief

GB July 22, 2024, 10:45 pm Actually there is a tab.. it's called paying for the military aid.. Tax dollars paid for it. If a country does not pay their 2% to receive it, they should not reap the benefits. By the way, the 2% only covers a fraction of the total aid they get.

Considering this administration is comfortable wasting military equipment such as they did in their botched pull out in Afganistan. In the military if a Soldier, Airman or Marine was to lose a piece of equipment such as a rifle or night vision equipment, they would likely be Court Marsheled and discharged with less than honorable conditions. Where is the accountability for ANYONE in this administration? They literally abandoned billions of dollars of sensitive military equipment, abandoned American citizens during the disastrous pull out in Afganistan. They basically armed our enemies with our equipment and nobody was held accountable! Not even for the 13 Americans killed and it did not have to happen.

Several countries such as Canada, Spain and Italy are just a few of the countries not paying the 2% of their GDP. What these countries owe every year is also a fraction of what the United States spends. Yes! There is a tab..

DE July 23, 2024, 4:23 am Trump wants us out of NATO because Putin wants NATO dead.

Our spending on NATO is our spending on NATO - it neither rises nor falls on the spending of the other members.

"Do your own research" and stop listening to Putin's mouthpieces
RS July 23, 2024, 4:40 pm I am truly amazed how people have fallen in line with Trump for no other reason that if he says something.

It used to be that both parties agreed that Russia was our enemy and Putin even worse. If you are a Russian dissident, you might find yourself lying on the cement of a parking lot from a high-rise window or poisoned as Alexey Valalny was a few months ago. That’s how Putin deals with dissent.

For the past several years, Trump has saddled up to Putin who wants the force of NATO to be diminished and guess what MAGA now parrots the same thing.

Trump’s infinity for strong-men dictators includes Viktor Orban of Hungary and now MAGA supports him as well. Why is it that MAGA is willing to parrot a liar, convicted felon, and strong-man wannabe when he makes outlandish and ill-informed statements?

History has a way of repeating itself. One response on this page said NATO is not a concern for Americans. Let’s talk about something else. My response to that is that maybe people should pay attention.

America stood by and let Hitler roll-over Europe and murdered millions of Jews for a long time before we entered that war.

In fact, our entrance in WWII was not because America wanted to save Europe but because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and after U.S. declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on us. America’s dawdling costed innumerable lives in Europe because we collectively were not paying attention and was in the throes of an isolationist movement much the same as it is today. Be careful, history might repeat itself.

GB July 24, 2024, 6:57 am RS, that whole Russian collusion thing was fake news that Hillary and the Democrats made up and lied about for years. As you know, it wasn't true. It was a lie made up to slander Trump. Trump never did anything for Putin. It was Hillary under Obama, who as Secretary of State signed off on selling uranium to Putin and the Russians. Remember that whole "pushing the reset button" on Russian and US relations Hillary was proudly pushing?
WW2 did not start because America wasn't paying attention, it started because the moves Hitler made were allowed to go unchecked by weak leadership in Britain and France who did not have the guts to put words into action before the moves Hitler was making spilled over into war on their own soil.
The arguments you make appears to leave out facts you either miss or intentionally ignore.
PK July 24, 2024, 11:58 am RS & others...So...What would President Harris do about the border and the over 10 million illegal immigrants already here??? You may recall that Biden put on her RED nose as the Clown to cover the border. Then he canned her. They are still crossing every single day!! Don't you believe they are costing the state and federal government valuable resources needed elsewhere in OUR OWN country??? It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out what they are doing 24/7!!!!!

I am NOT crazy about Trump and Vance, but they want to deport them. CHEAPER TO DEPORT THAN TO SUPPORT [until they die here]!!!!!

And that is the D..N TRUTH!!!!!
