In decades of Jerry Lewis MDA Telethons, this is probably the funniest line:

"You know there were all of these rumors about us breaking up, when you weren't here when we started the show, I thought they were true."

Jerry spoke those words to Dino --Dean Martin-- when Frank Sinatra surprised him by bringing Martin to the stage. Despite their phenomenal success as a comic duo, Martin and Lewis had split up over disagreements in their show. They were apart for 20 years.

The 1976 Telethon brought them back together. Frank Sinatra came on stage, donated $5,000 and then told Jerry that he had a friend who appreciated what Jerry was doing and wanted to come see him.

There were no words, only applause, hugs and smiles for well over a minute.

I was too young to understand this at the time, but the mother of a friend told me about it. She was still moved, a day later, as she described what she had seen on the Telethon.

Jerry Lewis is not scheduled to be on the Telethon tonight. The MDA kicked him off. While there is not much official explanation, it's basically because Jerry Lewis, at age 85, is, at times, a grumpy old man who says things that are not totally politically correct. Also, his style of entertainment is not popular with the younger audience.

Grumpy old men do that, and they usually have a point. And as far as the audience, we need more people reminding us of how much more intelligent, interesting and funny entertainment and TV used to be decades ago.

After reading my short article about the Vinton firemens' "Fill the Boot" fund-raiser, a reader pointed out that despite my headline, the MDA no longer uses the phrase, "Jerry's Kids."

That's correct.

But if the MDA is smart (and this grumpy almost old man who at times utters less-than-politically correct things will tell you he does not think the MDA people are big on intelligence, based on how they treated Lewis this year), they will make the shortened MDA telethon all about Jerry Lewis, and the billion or so dollars he has raised to help families whose children face crippling disease.

American learned 35 years ago that the Telethon can be a time for the grownups to do the right thing, too. I just hope those MDA bosses were old enough in 1976 to learn the lesson that Martin and Lewis could teach them in 2011.

HJ September 4, 2011, 8:39 pm Absolutely well said!

Jerry has been an ass at times, but to deny the man his due is obscene. He made this telethon and it shall perish without him.

A good take on the behind the scenes drama is here:

September 4, 2011, 9:33 pm It a same how people in high places forget about those old grumpy men and dont realize that for 46 years he has done so much for his kids. Jerry Lewis is an icon and it is a shame what they have done. Shame on MDA and their bosses only God knows how long he has to live and this was great part of his life. Shame on MDA!!!!
Tb September 5, 2011, 5:52 am This year\'s MDA Telethon was a bust! Lousy entertainment, no Jerry and no moving tribute to the icon that has raised household awareness and a ton of money to fight neuromuscular diseases. As a previous commenter said, SHAME ON YOU MDA!
EO September 5, 2011, 6:58 am Last night, the four new Hosts eulogized Jerry Lewis. They spoke of him past tense as if he was dead. They spoke of him in passing. They showed a montage of Jerry\'s funny faces at 11:57 pm. There was no total board. They had B list entertainers. And without Jerry Lewis, there was NO HEART. You wrote, \"if the MDA was smart\". Well, they weren\'t. They were foolish - in spades. Lewis may be an 85 year old man. He may be politically incorrect at times. But he has been at the forefront of entertainment since 1946. No one of the new generation of so-called entertainers can boast that accomplishment. MDA could have done the \"gentlemanly\" thing by honoring Jerry in a public forum and pass the baton of hosting duties. MDA lent only questions and took away all credibility last night. Celine Dion thanked Jerry for his hard work. She was a class act. The others? They were a bunch of bums and they should all be very ashamed. A telethon is a time for adults to do the right thing. Last night, there were no adults doing the right thing. Just a bunch of stupid children acting like smart adults. What a sham!
CW September 5, 2011, 9:12 am The MDA Telephon was not the same without Mr. Jerry Lewis. The MDA was Jerry Lewis. What were yall Thinking ?
s September 5, 2011, 2:26 pm It is a shame what they did to Jerry. It just proves the greed of the powerful to obscure the good of a great man, not even to keep his name associated with it. I would like to know who the group of bosses at MDA are and how much money they fill their pockets with that Jerry rose to help the kids. We would probable be amazed. I can not even find the names of those responsible for this, they are cowards and disgusting examples of human beings.
W September 5, 2011, 11:45 pm I am getting really tired of hearing this news. FACT: Most of the money is raised months before the day of the telethon. As it was billed as Jerry\'s final year, THAT ALONE accounts for the increase in dollars. Just see what happens next year! Half this amount, at best.

JL September 6, 2011, 10:18 am Understandably so the MDA doesn\'t want them called Jerry\'s Kids anymore, but unfortunately for them they still are and hopefully always will be.
