Annual Special Populations Bowling Outing

  We had our annual Special Populations bowling outing on Friday, February 3rd. Every participant enjoyed having the opportunity to bowl two games at Berry's Lanes before heading out to Pizza Ranch for lunch immediately afterwards.    Pictured above are the winners for the 5 awards given out.

Vikings wrap up swim season

Jake Stodola, Brandon Tharp, John Levis, Tyler Naughton receive 6th place in the 200 Medley Relay   Saturday in Marshalltown the Vikings wrapped up there swim season with a strong showing at the district meet.  Facing perennial powerhouse Cedar Falls as well as strong squads from host Marshalltown, Linn-Mar, Waterloo East and West and Ottumwa, the young Vikings grabbed a sixth place finish ahead of Waterloo East and just behind Ottumwa.

Viking wrestlers Neal, Merchant advance to districts

Michael Neal, 126 Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers Michael Neal (126#) and Nathan Merchant (132#) oth placed 2nd at Sectionals this past weekend.  They will advance to Districts at Oelwein this Saturday. 

Vikings improve to 14-3, continue to lead WaMaC West

Grant Sagan scored 22 points for Vinton-Shellsburg Friday evening, as the Vikings defeated Clear Creek-Amana, 69-46. Max Griffifth scored 19, including five 3-point shots. The Vikings built an early 22-6 first quarter lead. Max Kearns aided the Viking offense with eight points and 13 assists. Sagan led the Vikes in rebounds with 11. See complete stats HERE.

Adult Bags League being offered at VPRD

  Summer is still a ways away and tailgating season is even further in the distance, but that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy one of your favorite summertime activities! The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is offering a new Adult Bags League, also known as Baggo, for anyone 18 years and older that are interested in getting a team together.

8th grade boys win home basketball tourney

The Vinton-Shellsburg 8th grade boys won their home tourney Saturday. 8th grade boys were champions of their own tournament on Saturday.  They are coached by Todd Bohnsack and Roger Roseberry.  Players include: Blake Patterson, Brian Stainbrook, Kyle Jorgensen, Jon Betterton, Grant Noren, Tyler Rippel, Sean Noeller, Austin Bohnsack and Tyler Stueck.

Years of playing together lead to Vikings' 2011-12 hoop success, says coach

  Three times this year, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team has played games decided by two points. They defeated Williamsburg and Marion by 2, and lost at Clear Creek-Amana by a field goal. The Vikings face rematches of those last two games this week, as they travel to Williamsburg on Tuesday then host CCA on Friday. Only seven teams in Class 3A have records better than the WaMaC-West leading Vikings, who are 13-2 on the season.

Pink Night at Benton: Bobcats remain unbeaten with victory over VS

Natalie Ketchen looks to pass the ball to a teammate. Two weeks after hosting their own Pink Night, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes participated in another girls high school basketball pink night at Benton Community on Friday evening. The Bobcats wore pink uniforms and organized a variety of events to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer. The unbeaten Benton Community team defeated the Vikettes by a score of 64-35.

Lil Racer Club to offer activities for children at Benton County Speedway

  A new club for chldren, the Lil' Racer Car Club, Inc., is beginning this year for the young fans of the Benton County Speedway. The club will be available for free for area children under age 14, and will include a variety of activities. A fund-raising bowling event is scheduled for March 24, at Berry's Lanes, from 2-4 p.m.
