The Vinton-Shellsburg football team is "miles ahead" of where it was last year, especially in terms of strength and speed says Coach Joe Womochil.
Yet, the Vikings face a tough schedule that includes games against six teams that reached the play-offs last season.
Coach Womochil, now in his second season, said the Vikings have a core group of team leaders who are motivating others to regularly work out in the weight room.
Another big plus: More players are suiting up for the Vikings. Camp participation increased from less than 50 last year to nearly 70 this summer, said the coach.
The Vikings will still have to rely on some sophomores to help fill the varsity positions, but the numbers among underclassman are encouraging. The offensive line will include many juniors; Womochil expects them to have much success during the next two seasons.
The Vikings were 3-6 last year, and play in a tough district that includes 2012 State Champion Decorah. Other playoff teams on its schedule include South Tama, Western Dubuque, West Delaware, Williamsburg and Crestwood,Cresco.
Camp ended Thursday; after a weight-lifting session in the morning, the team will travel to the Womochil farm northwest of Vinton for its annual camp out. The players will pick corn, dig potatoes and help cook their meal then engage in a variety of team-building activities.
