On Monday night, the school board approved the addition of a high school bowling program for the Vinton-Shellsburg school district. The Vinton-Shellsburg high school students addressed the school board last spring with this proposal and they are really excited about this opportunity to compete against other high schools.
Our Vinton-Shellsburg team will join multiple schools in our conference in bowling competitions at local bowling alleys. The bowling schedule for our high school bowlers is still being decided upon but it looks like we may compete in eight to ten competitions this school year.
The students currently bowling in the Jr/Sr Jets league at Berry's Lanes are all excited about this opportunity and can't wait for the high school season to start. Any students interested in bowling will have the opportunity to join as long as they meet the guidelines established by the Iowa High School Association.
The Vinton-Shellsburg bowling team will practice a couple days a week at Berry's Lanes. Berry's Lanes has been very supportive of the addition of bowling for the Vinton-Shellsburg school district. The student bowlers want to thank Berry's Lanes for all their support in the past and are excited about the new opportunities they are going to have.
Bowling competitions may have both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams for guys and gals, depending on the schools competing. Each bowling competition with include bowling two full games and five "baker" games. A Baker game is when a five member team bowls two frames in each game.
The bowling season will start at the beginning of November and will end around the end of February. The finale of the season is the District competition in late February. The District competitions enables the bowlers to earn individual and team advancement to the state competition in Des Moines.
The Vinton-Shellsburg bowling team is still looking for a coach to lead them into their first bowling season. This position requires the coach to have a coaching certificate. Please contact the High School if you are interested.
