While celebrating with his team the 48-19 win over Benton Community on Friday, Vinton-Shellsburg football coach Jim Womochil reminded them of last season, when they followed a big win over Benton with a disappointing loss to South Tama.
The Vikings play the Trojans next Friday; preparations began at 8 a.m. Saturday for that game.
"We have a good chance of coming home to Homecoming (on Sept. 20) with a 3-0 record," Womochil told his players. The Vikings travel to Oelwein for the Week 3 game before hosting Western Dubuque.
The Vikings started slow on Friday, allowing Benton to drive for a touchdown on the game's first possession. But the Vikings responded with a touchdown drive of their own.
Five different Vikings scored touchdowns for the Vikings. Senior Chase Overton ran for two scores; junior Michael Neal scored on a one-yard run; and sophomores Joel Barnes, Nick Hyland and Jordan Womochil also scored touchdowns, with Womochil scoring two from the quarterback position in the second half.
Hyland led the offense with 193 yards on 24 carries. Defensively, Barnes led the Vikings with 10 tackles; El Rogers had nine.

Editor\'s Note: Football, unlike other sports, is divided into Districts that are seemingly unrelated to the conference. A few teams in the District are in the WaMaC but most are not. S. Tama is joining the WaMaC next year, but that is unrelated to football districts. I think the rivalries now are more geography-based (neighboring schools)
Editor\'s Note: Thanks and remember Ryan Clemens took many of them.
