After the Vinton-Shellsburg freshmen defeated Benton Community, 14-6, in Friday's season opener, Tony Stenberg stood at midfield, receiving congratulations from the men who had coached him as a player.

Stenberg, a 2009 graduate, is in is first year as a teacher at the V-S Alternative High School, and also as freshman football coach. He had played football and other sports at Benton, where the same men who coached the opposing team on Friday had coached him from 2005-2009.

The Vikings played tough defense, and touchdown runs by QB Tyler Bartz and RB Tanner Davis were enough points for the victory. The Vikings led, 8-6, at halftime.

JK September 3, 2013, 11:52 pm Perhaps all of the freshman football players should have gotten to play in Friday\'s game. These boys practiced in 90 degree weather, long hours just like the boys who were on the field during the whole game. Each player deserves a chance to play. This week I hope they all get on the field.
