VS cross country athletes had many reasons to celebrate at Williamsburg on Tuesday.
The 2013 Vinton-Shellsburg cross country season -- delayed a week because of the heat -- began in similar fashion as 2012, with Lily Horst at the head of the pack among girls and the VS boys taking first place.
Horst, now a sophomore, led VS girls and finished first in the event 50 seconds ahead of the second-place runner at the Raider Invitational in Williamsburg on Tuesday evening. The boys team won first place at Williamsburg for the second straight year.
The JV boys also finished first. VS girls finished second in team scoring in both varsity and JV races.
Last year, the boys went to State as a team and Horst and Bristi Gerber competed in the girls event as individuals.
