The Vinton Shellsburg girls soccer team upped its season record to 6-4 with a 5-1 win over the the Anamosa Raiders on Tuesday, May 13th in Anamosa.

Lyndsey Cornell, Maci Griffith, Emily Reisch and Grace Milroy each scored a goal and one goal was scored from a deflection off a kick from Grace. Ashley McKenna and Ellie Lane each had one assist and Grace Milroy had two. Chelsey Mier had 19 saves.

The junior varsity team also prevailed over the Raiders JV team with a 1-0 win. The VSHS goal was scored by Emily Howes-VonStein.

In an earlier game, the Vikettes lost to Center Point-Urbana, 1-0 in a contest shortened because of rainy weather and a water-soaked field.

The team has a full schedule this week with two more games away in Benton, Thursday, May 15th and Independence, Friday, May 16th. The team has three games away next week: Tuesday, May 20th in Solon, Thursday, May 22nd in Monticello and Friday, May 23rd in Manchester.

The 6-4 record is the best in VS girls soccer history. The girls have won back-to-back games twice this year; two wins in a row is another first for the young team which features three sophomores as its leading scorers.

The coach summarizes the scoring, all of which took place in the first half.

At the 35 minute mark-Ashley McKenna crossed to Grace Milroy who scored. Anamosa tied it 2 minutes later. At the 31 minute mark a Grace Milroy corner kick bounced off an Anamosa player into the goal. At 25 minutes Emily Reisch scored from a long shot outside the box. At 6:13 Maci Griffith scored from a hard shot at the top of the box. At 2:27 Lyndsey Cornell scored off a cross from Grace Milroy.

The big lead allowed coach Cornell to do more substituting in the second half.
