Editor's note: After finishing 5th in Sunday's feature, Vinton modified racer Scott Hogan continues to be the points leader, by a narrow margin, although Troy Cordes gained a few points with his win Sunday. Hogan is also the Modifieds point leader at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
Sunday's event also included a Lil Racers Club box car race event that was dedicated to Zoey Tuttle, one of the Urbana 5, who would have celebrated her 13th birthday. Zoey loved racing, being a helper in the pits and enjoyed the box car racing events. One of the photos on a car in honor of the Urbana 5 shows Zoey running the race last year. See those photos HERE.
VINTON, Iowa – Nathan Ballard continued his winning ways Sunday night at Benton County Speedway.
The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock point leader drove to his third straight win and eighth of the season on the Vinton quarter-mile.
Pole-sitter Jason Cox held the lead for the early stages of the 16-lapper before Leah Wroten made her bid for the top spot on the fifth circuit. As Wroten made her way into the lead, Ballard chased her into second.
Wroten fought off pressure from Ballard until he was able to sneak by for the lead with four laps to go. Ballard held on for the win while Wroten fought off pressure from Justin Wacha to finish second.
Troy Cordes first used the high side and then the low groove on the way to his second Cassill Motors IMCA Modified win of the season.
Jerry Dedrick took the early lead from his outside front row starting spot while Cordes made his way through the field from a fourth row start.
Cordes used the low groove to drive past Dedrick on the eighth of 20 laps to march to victory lane. Bill Roberts held off Zach Less in a terrific battle for second.
Curtis Roster drove to his first Ron-Da-Voo Lounge & Deli IMCA Stock Car win since Sept., 2, 2012. Roster led all 15 laps and withstood constant pressure from Damon Murty to score the impressive victory. Kevin Rose ran third.
Kyle Olson worked the low side past Dave Schulze with just two laps remaining to score the victory in the 16-lap Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature. Matt Petrzelka finished third.
Don Erger raced to his seventh BCS Micro Mod win of the year. He made his way around Tristan Cordes with three laps to go on his way to victory. Jeff Davis came home third.
