The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings have played two of their first four games in a cold, driving rain that continued throughout the evening.
They have already also played two of the top-ranked teams in the state.
West Delaware was ranked 2nd in Class 3A coming into Friday's game. The Hawks took a 15-0 halftime lead, then scored quickly two times in the third quarter, taking advantage of the wind and strong defense to keep the ball on the Viking side throughout.
The Vikings managed a late touchdown after the Hawks had built up a 35-0 lead and the mercy rule was in effect, with the clock continuing to run.
The Vikings are now 2-2 on the season, winning against Benton Community on the road in the rainy opener and defeating Charles City 6-0 a week ago. Their other loss was to 2nd-rated Class 2A team South Tama.
Next week, the Vikings travel to Independence, where the Mustangs enter the halfway mark of the season at a perfect 4-0, after consecutive one-touchdown wins over Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock. The contest is the Independence Homecoming game and will be televised on KCRG 9.2 TV.
