The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings welcomed back quarterback Jordan Womochil, who was injured three weeks earlier, as they traveled to Independence hoping to spoil the undefeated Mustangs’ Homecoming.

In the first quarter, it appeared the Vikings were poised to do just that. Led by Womochil’s quick passing and Joel Barnes’ powerful running, the Vikings quickly moved the ball 80 yards and took a 7-0 on a 12-yard run by Barnes and the PAT kick by Austin Bohnsack.

The Vikings stopped the Mustangs on their first possession, with Barnes sacking Indee senior quarterback Nicholas Holt for a big fourth-down loss.

The first quarter ended with the Vikes with the ball on the Mustang 12.

But the 7th-rated Mustangs regrouped at the break, and scored the next 30 points en route to a 43-27 win.

While both teams moved the ball well, big plays for the home team made the difference. Holt ran for 64 yards for one touchdown, and also threw touchdown passes of 59 and 43 yards.

Next week, the Vikings travel to Decorah, and then the following will host Waverly-Shell Rock for the V-S Homecoming game.

In the fresh-soph game, the Vikings also took an early lead, but lost 38-32.
