The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team won first place in Thursday's Wamac Conference Super Meet hosted by Clear Creek-Amana at Tiffin.
The Vikings scored 99 team points; Mount Vernon was second with 95.
V-S won two events. Tyler Bartz was first in the long jump (21 feet, 6 inches) and the 4 x 400 relay team (Nick Hyland, Tyler Bartz, Blake Bohnsack, Joel Barnes) finished first with a time of 3:24.89.
The 4 x 400 event was the last of the meet; the win brought the Vikes back from a 1-point deficit to secure the trophy.
The Vikes finished 2nd or 3rd in several events to compile enough team points for the championship.
"I am so proud of our effort last night," said coach Aric Chvala. "We have stressed all year long that our depth is our best attribute and it certainly paid off last night. To win a meet like that you have to have a lot of people step up and be their best, our guys have been doing that all year so to see it last night was no surprise, our guys hold themselves to a high standard and it showed last night. I hope that gives us a lot of momentum that we can carry forward to the next two weeks."
