A late defensive stop and later touchdown were the difference Friday night as Oelwein came from behind to take out the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, 21-14.
The Vikings (2-1 on the season) forged a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Brooks Erickson capped a 65-yard opening drive with a 1-yard dive. After Oelwein scored to cut the lead to 7-6, Erickson flipped a 14-yard TD pass to Jose Wilson to give the Vikes a 14-6 lead.
Oelwein tied the game before the half and it stayed that way until late in the fourth quarter. The Vikings moved the ball from midfield to the Huskies’ 20 with under three minutes to go in the game. On a fourth and five Oelwein made the stop, then charged 80 yard to score the game-winner with 1:20 to go. The extra point made it 21-14.
Wilson had an incredible night offensively, rushing 18 times for 152 yards while adding another 53 yards receiving on five catches, including the TD. Erickson was seven for 17 passing for 77 yards, and also intercepted a pass on defense. Luke Beyer paced the defense with 9 tackles.
The Vikings will be on the road again Friday night as they travel to Waterloo to take on unbeaten Columbus. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
