MOUNT VERNON - A stunning second quarter blitz sent Coach Joe Johnson's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings to a 72-44 loss Friday night in WaMaC Conference play.

The Vikes (2-3 overall, 1-3 in the conference) trailed 15-9 after one period, but the Mustangs hit them with a 30-point deluge in the second period and that six-point margin became a 45-14 halftime bulge. Sam Griffith and Jose Wilson hit for 10 points each to share scoring honors for the Vikes, with CJ Rickels and Derron Hughes adding seven each. Ryan Moore, Sam Moen, Elijah Kalous, Jace Rake and David Lapan-Islas all added two. The Vikings close out the 2019 portion of their schedule Friday when they go on the road to take on Benton Community.
