After putting the winning run on third base with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failing the score, the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team had to go into extra innings to defeat Center Point-Urbana during the first game of the Monday double-header.
In the eighth, Josh Ferguson led off with a double. Luke Moen singled; Ferguson rounded third and slid into home as the ball bounced away from the CPU catcher.
Senior Grant Sagan pitched a complete game and earned the win, holding the Stormin' Pointers to just one run in eight innings.
In Game 2, CPU jumped to a 5-0 first inning lead, taking advantage of a couple errors and walks along with a few hits. The Vikings were able to cut the lead to 7-5 by the end of the fifth inning, but CPU scored twice more for a 9-5 win.
The Vikings travel to Marion Wednesday then play Anamosa at home on Friday.
