42° North Winery - Wine Tasting and Entertainment this Saturday September 30

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA came to assist with the grape picking from 42° North Winery's growing vineyard. On Tuesday, David and Mary Paustian along with their son Garrett, coordinated their days off to work together in bottling wine.  The wine that they are bottling will be there for you to enjoy...next year. The 160-gallon tank full of "Slinky" wine, a Moscato which Mary explained is the sweetest of all their wines, will fill about 800 bottles and take approximately six steady hours of work for the three to complete.

Grain Safety Shorts: Grain Handling Equipment Safety

Safety tips for grain handling equipmentHarvest season can be hectic, but it is well worth taking the time to consider safety when operating grain handling equipment. Hazards abound when handling grain, such as equipment entanglement, grain entrapment and engulfment and dust explosions, among others.Agricultural confined-space related cases of injuries and fatalities saw a dramatic rise in 2022, including grain entrapment cases that rose nearly 45%, based on Purdue University’s annual report.

Friendly reminder for our Farmers

Every harvest season I hold my breath. Not because of the dust or the thousands of Asian beetles that make their way into the house, but in apprehension. This Saturday the extension office is holding a Farm Safety day at the fairgrounds and the always demonstrate how they rescue someone who gets stuck in a grain bin. In the picture, you can see what happens on the inside of a grain bin when emptying the bins.
