VSCSD announces Iowa Biliteracy Seal Recipients

Click to view recipientsThe Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is pleased to announce that six students from the Class of 2022 have earned Biliteracy Seals from the State of Iowa. Those receiving the award under the guidance of VSCSD Spanish instructor Michele Lash include Zena Aragon, Natalie Armstrong, Carly Bendull, Katelyn Hyland, Samantha Walton, and Jozee White.

Arsonists damage Riverside Park, destroy Vehicle and Spray Paint Rec Center

Vinton Parks and Rec Department was attacked by arsonist(s) early Saturday morning UPDATED: On May 14, 2022, at around 02:54AM, The Vinton Fire Department and the Vinton Police Department responded to a report of a fire north of the swimming pool. One of the Vinton Parks and Recreation vehicles was fully engulfed with fire as well as the main playground equipment at the Riverside Park “ninja park”. The vehicle and the playground equipment were a total loss.

VSCSD Foundation awarded 38 Scholarships to Vinton-Shellsburg Students

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School Foundation is in its 26th year of supporting graduating students with scholarships and providing opportunities for students from PK-12th grade. Many generous people have given funds for the benefit of generations to come, and this year the Foundation wishes to recognize those people and share their stories.  Tony Bopp created a scholarship fund in honor of his late wife Jill Lockard-Bopp, to support students pursuing post-secondary education in the performing arts.

Vinton Police Department adds New Officer

The Vinton Police Department, welcomed Officer Isacc Kelly who was sworn in at Thursday night’s City Council meeting. Officer Kelly arrived here from Marengo. Mayor Bud Maynard gave the oath of office to Officer Kelly.

V-S FFA Leads 3rd Graders in Agriculture

By: Co-Reporters, Grace Schminke and Alana FlemingOn Wednesday, May 4th, The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter worked with the Benton Community and Belle Plaine FFA Chapters to educate 3rd Graders throughout Benton County on several different agricultural aspects. The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter taught students about Pigs, Poultry, Rabbits, and assisted with Horses.

Parizek on Upcoming Road Projects in the County - Expect Detours

County Engineer Myron Parizek spoke to the Vinton Kiwanis Club concerning the state and county road construction projects Myron Parizek, the Benton County Engineer, on behalf of the Secondary Roads Department shared with the Kiwanis Club several projects that will be happening in Benton County this year. Parizek has served with the county for 33 years, 23 as the County Engineer and the assistant before that. He said that it looked like Secondary Roads will look a lot less involved this year compared to the eight bridge projects that were under construction during last year's construction season.

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight announces flight to Washington DC. Flight #43

On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will launch Flight #43. The mission of this non-profit organization is to provide veterans with a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to visit monuments and memorials built in honor of their service and sacrifice. Since the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight began operations in 2009, 42 flights have transported 3,791 veterans, along with their guardians to Washington, DC.

Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab has received Telligen’s Blue Ribbon in COVID-19 Vigilance Award Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab has received Telligen’s Blue Ribbon in COVID-19 Vigilance Award. This award recognizes their commitment to preventing the spread of COVID-19 and places the organization on Telligen’s Iowa 2022 Blue Ribbon in COVID-19 Vigilance Recognition List.“Nursing homes that receive this award have demonstrated their commitment to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Sue Stefan, Telligen Executive Director, Federal Health Solutions.

Vinton Lutheran Home Mother/Daughter Tea features Area Students

Bryleigh Farmer Four Vinton-Shellsburg students took time out of their day to visit Vinton Lutheran Home Assisted Living's Mother/Daughter Tea that was held at the Lutheran Home. On Thursday afternoon the students performed songs that they had previously learned for a singing event that the school had competed in. Michala Martin went along with the students to accompany them on the piano.

Lindauer student at William Penn University Wins Film Festival Award

Noah Lindauer wins Noah Lindauer, ’25 recently won “Best Undergraduate Documentary” at the Wildcat Spirit Student Film Festival at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Noah, a New Media major at William Penn University, enjoyed the day-long festival which included workshops with sessions on filmmaking and acting, as well as a screening of the selected films.
