News : Vinton Fire Department responds to overnight fire on Wednesday evening

"The Vinton Fire Department was dispatched by Benton County, Iowa Sheriff's Office Dispatch to a reported structure fire at a private residence in the 700 block of West 8th Street.

Vinton Fire responded with Chief Staab, Assistant Chief Wood, Engines 719 and 711, and Ladder 707, for a total response of 16 personnel. The first units arrived on scene at 11:48 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found the residence fully involved, with fire extending throughout the interior of the structure. All three occupants had safely exited the residence prior to fire department arrival. Two interior crews made entry and initiated fire attack; however, interior operations were later limited due to significant structural compromise, including unsafe floor conditions.

Operations transitioned to exterior fire suppression and overhaul. Firefighting efforts were complicated by the home’s early-1900s balloon-frame construction with lath-and-plaster walls, which allowed fire to spread through concealed spaces and attic areas, requiring extensive overhaul to fully extinguish remaining hotspots. Additionally, the steel-sheeted roof contributed to extreme heat conditions and further complicated ventilation and overhaul

operations.

The Vinton Fire Department remained on scene until 3:43 a.m. No injuries to fire department personnel were reported. The residence and its contents are considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Look
