The break is arriving at just the right time for the Stormin' Viking swimmers who are looking forward to the opportunity to get healthy and put in some work. Flu, strep, COVID, injuries and other ailments have hit the team hard the past three weeks. Several days this week a third to half of the team were out, with several unable to practice at all this week. With four out sick Tuesday, and several others just returning from being sick, the squad managed a split at Williamsburg Tuesday defeating Oskaloosa handily while falling by a mere three points to host Williamsburg. On Monday we had 8 of our 18 guys out, four missed Tuesday's meet and several weren't able to practice the entire meet. Even a bunch of those who could compete, you could tell they were far from at their Friday at Decorah Ian Allsup swam pretty well despite having just been out sick. He managed a first in the 200 free and a narrow second in the 100 back. He gave it everything he had but you could see he was fighting fatigue and struggling to get air. Broden Farrell - who has been unable to do his specialty event the 100 breast - placed 3rd in the 100 free. Wes Farrell was 3rd in the 100 back and Ian Vrba was 3rd in the 100 breast. Brayden Beck also scored team points with a 4th in the 500 free and 9th in the 50 free. A lot of new swimmers continue to improve and contribute to the team. Junior James DeSmet, in his first year of swimming, has stepped into the A 200 free relay and also turned in a nice time drop to score points in the 100 Free. Senior Gabe Marzen, sophomores Spencer Williams and Jacob Dreier, and freshman Cole Rilling all turned in multiple new personal bests. The team will have a chance to get healthy and put in a lot of work over the break. The next meets are Tuesday, Jan 3rd at home Vs Decorah and then Saturday the 7th at Waterloo.
