Mike Svoboda, one of the owners of one of Vinton's newest stores, envisions a time when people will charter buses to visit Vinton, to enjoy its attractions -- and its stores.

Svoboda, along with his wife and parents, recently opened The Hope Chest antique store across the street from the Vinton Palace.

In an effort to promote his hometown, Svoboda initiated what he plans to be the first of many joint efforts among local retailers. This weekend, from Thursday to Saturday, the Hope Chest will be part of a Mother's Day Open House event. Other participating businesses include La Grange Pharmacy, Henkle Creek Mercantile and Cameron Clothing, Clingman Pharmacy, L Marie Boutique and Michael & Dowd Furniture.

Each business will offer a drawing for prizes, including a grand prize of an overnight stay in the Hancock House Bed and Breakfast in Dubuque.

Svoboda said the most important part of the event is the cooperation between business owners to promote Vinton.

"Each of us will also have many fliers listing all of the other businesses involved," he said.
