VS Middle Schoolers to perform 'Invisible' Friday, Saturday

Girls gather around an 'injured' Morgan White during the dodgeball scene of the VSMS musical. The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Plays will be presenting the original play Invisible this month.  Over 45 students grades 6th-8th will take part in the first time on stage performance. These students have worked very hard on stage and off stage on this very important play about how to become an active bystander in the face of bullying.

Organizers hope Bellamy Brothers concert becomes the first of many in area

The Bellamy Brothers will sing in Vinton, June 6; organizers hope the concert is the first of many. A group of local country music lovers is hoping that the Bellamy Brothers concert in June is just the beginning of a long series of area concerts. JT Promotions, the company formed by Kevin and Jackie Schlarbaum and Keith and Teresa Lindsey, is bringing the famous duo to Vinton for a concert June 6, at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Theresa Lindsey shares the story of how the event is coming together.

VSMS Jazz Band, Show Choirs prepare for 'Iconic' concert Tuesday

VSMS choir members wear shirts with blue hearts in honor of Emma Redlinger, who loved singing. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 17 to attend Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School music performances at 6:30 and 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.     The Jazz Band will perform at 6:30. Their program includes favorites, “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and “Oye Como Va” by Santana.   The middle school students recently performed at the NEIBA Jazz Band Festival and were awarded a division I rating.

Jazz Band to perform free concert with Wartburg Knightlighters, March 21

The musicians of the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Jazz Band will join several former members when the band joins the Wartburg Knightlighters Jazz 1 Band in a free concert Saturday, March 21, in the VSHS auditorium. The public is invited. Several former VSHS Jazz Band members now play for the Knighliters, along with alumni from Union, Independence and Cedar Rapids area schools.

Jerry Barlow to perform at the Library, Thursday, March 12

Jerry Barlow, the Celtic fingerstyle guitarist will be Performing at the Vinton Library, Thursday evening at 6:30.  Everyone is welcome.  The program is free.

'3 Billy Goats Gruff:' Elementary students learn about opera

Elementary students laugh during an opera performance of '3 Billy Goats Gruff' on Tuesday. Tilford and Shellsburg Elementary students learned about opera through a unique version of the childhood book "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," Tuesday in the Tilford auditorium. A troupe from the Des Moines Opera which includes Abigail Rethwisch, the daughter of Vinton native Ellen Martin, performed the story of the three goats and the troll which tried to keep them from crossing the bridge.

VSMS show choirs to perform 'Iconic," March 17

Final rehearsals are in motion for “Iconic,” the upcoming Vinton-Shellsburg 7th and 8th Grade Choir and Show Choir Performance.    The Middle School Jazz Band will also be performing.  The Tuesday, March 17, event will begin with a jazz band performance at 6:30 p.m. followed by the choir performances beginning at 7 p.

See Dates with a Nut at the Palace tonight!

Tonight is the 2nd night for Dates with a Nut.  Opening night kicked off with a great show.   Jim and April are the best comedic team, putting on a laugh a minute comedy.  Jim's character William has bitten off a little more than he can take with dates with 4 very unusual women. He is brought back to reality by his sidekick and waitress Dori, who keeps him trying just one more time.

In Depth: Imitation Game

While this year we are not having an Oscar Month, as such, with “The Imitation Game” the Palace screens another of the Academy’s 2014 favorites. Running on a shortened schedule due to ACT I’s “Dates With a Nut,” this movie plays Sunday, March 8 through Thursday, March 12 at 7 pm, and Monday, March 9 at 2 pm. “The Imitation Game” received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
