In Depth: 'August: Osage County' next on Palace screen

Oscar Month continues with “August: Osage County,” playing the Palace Friday, March 14 through Thursday, March 20 at 7 pm, and Monday, March 17 at 2 pm. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts star as a mother and daughter who when forced by circumstances struggle to be in the same house together, much less exchange a civil word. In fact, this film is fraught with mostly uncivilized words.

Palace will NOT be showing Nebraska this afternoon...

The Palace will NOT show Nebraska at 2 pm today, and very possibly not tonight.  The Nebraska hard drive we received is bad, so we are in limbo waiting for a new hard drive to arrive.  Unfortunately, this movie was not widely released, so there are no hard drives in the area. Patrons should check the website (www.vintonpalce.org) or call the InfoLine at 319/472-9958 for and updated schedule.

Community is the key to ACT 1 success, says actor Rich Hainstock

Rich Hainstock (shown rehearsing with Bonnie Beyer) says community theater is an 'addiction.' Community, says Rich Hainstock, is the key ingredient to the success of ACT 1. Rich, along with his wife, Mary Jo, is among the cast members of this week’s “Red Velvet Cake War.” He plays the lead male role of Newt Blaylock, the one-eyed wig and worm salesman. For the role, Rich grew what he calls a “scary” beard, which he combines with a black eye patch.

How one ACT 1 performer traveled 'way, way outside' her comfort zone

Caroline Dick rehearses for 'Red Velvet Cake Wars' with Jim Hilliard; the ACT 1 play opens tonight. Although she had done some acting in high school, Caroline Dick says it took her a long time to decide to audition for community theater as an adult. She plays the role of grumpy, well-dressed, sharp-tongued matriarch  La Merle Verdeen Minshew in the ACT 1 production of “The Red Velvet Cake War,” which opens tonight at the Palace Theatre.

Bold or bashful, ACT 1 may have a role for you

Melody Spence says performing in ACT 1 built up her self-esteem after a serious car accident. Every ACT 1 production, says Doug Martens, features local residents of all ages “expressing their creativity in a way we sometimes can’t do in our every day lives.” As Martens and the cast and crew of “The Red Velvet Cake War" prepare to open the comedy this week, they are also sharing their thoughts on what being part of ACT 1 has meant to them, and encouraging others to join the local community theater.

'Red Velvet Cake Wars:' ACT 1 brings unique southern comedy to Palace Stage

The ACT 1 cast of 'Red Velvet Cake Wars' is working hard to prepare for Thursday's opening show. A one-eyed worm and wig salesman.  Two relatives, including one famous for her inability to cook anything correctly, determined to make the best cake. A desperately lonely widow. An equally desperate wife who is trying to convince the court-appointed psychiatrist that despite her unusual attack on her husband and his mistress, she is not crazy.

This is a serious movie about a serious topic, the assassination of a Taliban leader in Afghanistan, based on The New York Times bestselling memoir of Ex Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.
