Veterans Honored at Center Point Historical Society's Annual Harvest Potluck

About 30 people came to the Center Point Historical Society annual Harvest Potluck, this year honoring WWII veterans and their families and held in partnership with the Center Point American Legion and Auxiliary.  Speaking at the informal program following the 5 p.m. supper were:  Dr. Kenneth Andersen, a WWII vet; Ken Dinger, a Korean vet who had just been on an Honor Flight to Washington D.

Vinton Garden Club members tour Waterloo Arboretum

The Vinton Garden Club, member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Central Region met at 8:15 am August 27th, 2014 to tour the Cedar Valley Arboretum in Waterloo, with Sharen Stueck as hostess. After our tour we held the meeting in the Welcome Center at the Arboretum then went for lunch at Lone Star Steak House. It turned out to be a nice day to take the tour.

Did you know this about the American Legion: Square Knot Award

The square Knot Award provides recognition to those members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion who who are actively involved with the youth of their communities through the programs of the Boys Scouts of America. The award consists of a gold and purple square knot patch, which may be worn on the Scout uniform, a certificate and congratulatory letter from the National Commander of the American Legion.

NCCC-FEMA Corps Team Hickory 1 Spends Service Round in Detroit

DSA teams go to locations of Emergency or presidentially declared disasters and assist the survivors in registering for federal assistance. If the applicants are found eligible, the assistance they receive will help them clean up after the disaster and repair disaster-related damages to their home.

AmeriCorps NCCC-FEMA Corps Class 21 Team Leader Spotlight: Mike Daniel

By: Sarah Williams Mike Daniel, from Rockwell, North Carolina is the team leader for Hickory 1in AmeriCorps NCCC- FEMA Corps Class 21. He arrived in Vinton on July 9 to start his 11-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Hickory 1 is made up of seven people from across the country and they will serve together around the United States.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: Andrew Johnson

He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 3 is made up of nine people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest.

Scott Bremer, from Atlanta, Georgia is serving on team Oak 7 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. He arrived in Vinton Februray11 to start his 10-month service term. Oak 7 is a team made up of eight people from across the country who will serve together across the Midwest. Scott said that the reason he joined AmeriCorps NCCC is for “The belief in the importance of service, the desire to see the country.

Area students earn presidential scholarships from Central College for their commitment to high academic achievement. Caitlyn Conway of Blairstown is a recent graduate from Benton H S and is now a freshman at Central College. Emily Dye of Newhall is a recent graduate from Benton H S and is now a freshman at Central College. Hannah Miller of Keystone is a recent graduate from Benton H S and is now a freshman at Central College.
