Cooling Dancers entertain VS basketball fans

The Cooling Dancers have been performing for VS fans at half-time of sophomore basketball games. The girls performed another routine on Friday.

Union's Hadachek, Dunkelberger named to Class 2A All-Academic team

All-Academic Team: Brian Dunkelberger & Trev Hadachek, Union Knights. The Iowa Football Coaches Association recently released their academic all state teams.   Union Community's Brian Dunkelberger and Trev Hadachek both were honored at the Union basketball game last night.  To be considered a senior must be a starter, have a minimum of 3.7 acculmlative GPA, and particpate in other school activities. Below is a list of the former Union football players we have record of receiving this award.

Mossmans donate $5K to Celebration Park

Mark and Kathy Mossman donated $5,000 to the Celebration Park project. The Celebration Park Project received another fantastic donation of $5,000 for the new community park.  Pictured here are Jon Clingman, Celebration Park Fundraising committee member and donors Kathy & Mark Mossman.  The Mossmans were very excited to donate to the project and are looking forward to the finished project as you enter Vinton from across the bridge.

Urbana area Korean War veterans receive honor

Our Veterans are special people in our communities and our country. Sixty-years ago our Korean Veterans went to war with not much recognition. Last year there was a parade in Des Moines to honor our Korean War Veterans. Secretary of Defense-Leon E. Panetta signed certificates of Appreciation to each Korean Veteran there. The certificates read: "IN RECOGNITION OF HONORABLE SERVICE DURING THE KOREAN WAR IN DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM.

College students urged to apply for Robert D. Blue Scholarship

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald reminds Iowa students that the application for the 2013 Robert D. Blue Scholarship is available online at www.rdblue.org. All Iowa residents who plan to attend college in Iowa for the 2013-2014 school year are eligible to apply. The Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation awards the Robert D. Blue Scholarship to Iowa students attending college in Iowa.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Spotlight: Jen Schollin

Name: Jen Schollin Hometown: Southington, Conn. Jen is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to reconnect with her country again after spending a year studying abroad in Paris. She feels that doing a year of service is a great way to give back while exploring the United States.

VSHS choir sends four to Luther College Dorian Festival

These four VSHS singers represented their choir in the Dorian Festival at Luther. This year, four Vinton-Shellsburg High School choir students were selected for the Luther College Dorian Festival. Pictured, from left: Beth Sauer (12), Nick Gardner (12), Jacob Bunge (11) and Alyssa Cantrell (11), traveled to Luther College in Decorah on January 13-14. They joined 1,200 other singers from across Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Dakota to form the largest select honor choir in the country.

VSHS Chamber Singers place 3rd at Onalaska, Wis.

This VSHS choir group won third place at a recent competition in Wisconsin.   On Friday, January 11, the VSHS Chamber Singers competed at the Onalaska Classic Concert Choir Competition in Onalaska, Wisconsin. Schools from Wisconsin and Iowa performed throughout the afternoon and evening for a panel of three judges. This year, the Chamber Singers placed in 3rd place again 10 other competing schools. Schools are not divided by size and Vinton-Shellsburg was the smallest represented school that evening.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Spotlight: Jeana DiBona

Name: Jeana DiBona  Hometown: Hanover, Mass. Jeana is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 2 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to take some time off from school after graduation to travel the country while helping people. Jeana graduated from Hanover High School in June 2012 and started taking independent study courses through FEMA.

4th Street Diner News

  The 4th Street Diner meal on Sunday, January 20th, will be Roast Pork, Mashed Potato/Gravy, Spinach, Peaches, Custard, WW Bread, Milk. On Monday, December 10th, the activity of the day was a Pepper Card Party.  There were five tables of players.  Frances Kelly won 1st place with 212 points.  Dora Vogt and Margaret Fuehrer tied for 2nd place with 207 points.
