On Monday, March 19th, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card Party. There were 4 tables of players. LaVonne Henkle won 1st place with 265 points. Anne Hopkins won 2nd place with 262 points. Dora Vogt won 3rd place with 256 points. After cards, Patty McKenna brought treats for her 90th birthday.
Area students named to Kirkwood 'Outstanding' lists
More than 25,000 students have studied at Kirkwood Community College in the past year. On April 6, the college faculty and staff honored 148 of them as some of the best of the lot. Kirkwood held its annual Outstanding Student Awards ceremony in the ballroom of The Hotel at Kirkwood Center.
Hundreds of family members and fellow students joined the honorees for a reception and recognition of their academic and leadership attainments.

Iowa State Fair Grandstand, Admission Tickets on Sale Saturday
Tickets for the much-anticipated Iowa State Fair Grandstand shows go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. through all Ticketmaster outlets. The 2012 line-up is presented by U.S. Cellular.
In addition to the previously-announced star-studded line-up, George Thorogood and The Destroyers will open for the Hank Williams Jr. "Taking Back the Country Tour.

The Vinton Garden Club member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., C4entral Region, Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, Inc. and District II met on March 28 in the home of Anne Dake.
The program was given by Ann Harrison on “Beautiful Winter Birds and how to attract them to your feeders.
NFWL and NRA sponsor scholarship contest for young women
The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association co-sponsor an academic scholarship contest for young women who are high school juniors and seniors. Winners receive a $3,000 college scholarship award and are given the opportunity to attend NFWL’s Annual Conference (all expenses paid).
Earth Week a good time to consider homemade household cleaners
With Earth Week just around the corner, some may consider using homemade household cleaners. Commercial household cleaners are required by the government's Federal Hazardous Substance Act to carry the appropriate labeling. If an ingredient is dangerous or poisonous, the label must say so. “Homemade cleaners should be labeled the same way,” says Brenda Schmitt, ISU Extension Family Finance Specialist.
Extension offers 'Money Talk: A Financial Course for Women'
At some point in many women’s lives, they will have to make major financial decisions. Money Talk, an online class offered through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, gives women the knowledge to make those decisions and improve their lives.

Iowa State Fair Campgrounds Open April 14 for Summer Fun
Warmer weather is here and, with Memorial Day around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan a worry-free weekend in the great outdoors. The Iowa State Fair Campgrounds has plenty of space available beginning April 14 through mid-July with country comforts alongside big city style and excitement.
The Campgrounds houses more than 1800 sites fully equipped with water and electrical hookups, 600 sites with sewers, and three large bathhouses outfitted with clean showers, toilets and sinks.
Deadline to Apply for Robert D. Blue Scholarship Draws Near
State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald reminds students the deadline to apply for a Robert D. Blue Scholarship is drawing near. Applications must be submitted online at www.rdblue.org by May 10 in order to be eligible for this year's award.
"Over the years we've helped thousands of Iowa students meet their college costs with this scholarship," Fitzgerald stated.
