VSHS Graduate Katherine Dick was recently inducted into the National Historical Honor Society, Phi Alpha Theta. The ceremony was held September 24, at Luther College in Decorah.

Phi Alpha Theta is an international honor society in history. Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta was chartered at Luther college in 1966. The membership is comprised of students and professors elected to membership on the basis of excellence in the study or writing of history. The society seeks to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together both intellectually and socially through participation in campus, regional, and national activities.

Ten Luther students joined Phi Alpha Theta this semester and received the symbol of the organization, the red rose, to commemorate the occasion.

Visiting Assistant Professor of History Mark Singer gave an address on his research and methodology, discussing in particular questions of grave goods in medieval England cemeteries. He asked, "What do grave goods, associated with pagan funerals, mean during the period of Christian conversion, especially when graves included both Roman-style goods and Christian items such as crosses?"
