Et cetera : National 4-H Livestock Event Placements Announced

Iowa 4-H teams took high honors at several recent national judging events, according to Mike Anderson, 4-H agriculture program coordinator with Iowa State University Extension.

The Western National Roundup was held Jan. 5-9, in Denver, Colo., where several Iowa teams participated in a variety of events including the Horse Judging Contest, Hippology, Horse Quiz Bowl and the Livestock Judging Contest.

Team members Heidi Andresen, Caley Jacobsen and Emily Kremer competed in the Horse Judging Contest. The team from Clinton County placed second overall and third in reasons. Andresen placed third overall individually and Jacobsen was 10th overall. Beverly Downey coached the team.

Madison County competed in the Hippology Contest. Team member Taylor Hildreth placed fourth in overall individual ranking, and the team also placed fourth overall. The team placed first in the stations phase and fourth in the exam phase. Other team members included Katie Gamble, Zane Peters and Hannah Puderbaugh. Jana Peters coached the team. Abbey Smith placed third in the Individual Demonstration Contest.

Benton County competed in the Horse Quiz Bowl. Team members included Emily Coover, Karley Kenney, Julie Long and Molly O’Brien. They were coached by Denise Schwab and Tanner Schwab.

Scott County’s team represented Iowa in the Livestock Judging Contest, ranking 13th overall and seventh in placings. Member Dylan Golinghorst finished 20th overall and second in placings. Other team members were Nick Bangert, Katie Friedrichs, Brett Lilienthal and Jake Lilienthal. Mike Holst coached the team.

Iowa’s first-ever representatives for the Western National Meats Judging Contest, also part of the roundup, finished fourth overall. Team members were Bay Boysen, Kolby Keltner, Kyle Pritchard and Kortney Wagner and were coached by Irvin Meier. In individual placings, Wagner finished 10th overall and Keltner finished 12th overall.

In November, Iowa’s All Star 4-H dairy judging team traveled to Louisville where they competed in the National Dairy Judging Contest, and team member Lars Sivesind of Allamakee County placed eighth overall in individual rankings. The Iowa team placed seventh out of 25 teams. Other members included Courtney Ehrlich, Dubuque County; Gina Fisher, Clayton County; and Tyler Fisher, Clayton County. The team was coached by Lee Kilmer.

The Fayette County Dairy Quiz Bowl team represented Iowa, placing fourth overall out of 20 teams at November’s National Dairy Quiz Bowl contest in Louisville, Ky. Team members included Joey Adams, Logan Worden, Rachel Scott, Brant Wade and Chelsey Fagle. Their coach was Marilyn Steffens.

In October, the top team from Iowa’s state level dairy judging competition moved on to the World Dairy Judging Contest in Madison, Wis. Team members included Brad Kruse, Austin Knapp, Rachel Demmer and Emily Neumueller. Jeff Hammerand coached the team.
