March 15, 2021

Call to Order

President Rob Levis called the regular meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. in the Administrative Office Board Room.

Roll Call / Pledge of Allegiance

Sue Gates, Kathy Van Steenhuyse, Tom Burke, Rob Levis, Jake Fish, Mike Timmermans,

Kyle Koeppen, Superintendent, and Brenda Barkdoll, Board Secretary/Treasurer were present with

the exception of Becky Williams.

Receive Visitor/Audience Comments

There were no visitor/audience comments.

Administrator Reports

Kyle Reeves shared Kindness Week, preschool orientation, kindergarten roundup, end of trimester, and ISAP testing.

Ryan Davis shared Kindness Week, preschool roundup, kindergarten roundup, and derecho damages

Shelly Petersen shared registration for high school, visiting Shellsburg with 5th graders, medicaid audit, state alternative assessment, end of third quarter, field trips, and ISAP testing.

Tony Islas shared track meet, NHS induction, finished ACT testing, ISAP testing, end of third quarter, 9 graduates from West Campus, and thanked everyone for their support.

Superintendent Reports

Superintendent Koeppen reported on solar update, Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress, Wellness Committee through Farm to School Grant, bus barn update, open enrollment requests, and the calendar.

Board Reports/Requests

Tom Burke shared information on the insurance meeting and congratulated the big champion bowler.

Kathy Van Steenhuyse shared information on legislation.

Rob Levis thanked Kyle Koeppen on attaining the solar information.

General Business of the Board

Consent Items

1046. It was moved by Gates and seconded by Van Steenhuyse to accept the consent items as presented with exception of power school contract. Motion carried 6/0.

Public Hearing on K-12th School Calendar for 2021-2022

Hearing opened at 7:20 p.m. There were no public comments. Hearing closed at 7:21 p.m.

1047. It was moved by Timmermans and seconded by Fish to approve the 2021-2022 calendar as presented. Motion carried 6/0.

Review Budget for FY22

The board went through the budget workshop book and discussed the district's finances.

Approve Proposed 2021-222 Budget for Publication and Publish 2020-21 Budget Amendment

1048. It was moved by Fish and seconded by Timmermans to publish the 2021-22 budget and the

2020-21 budget amendment including funding for the items outlined. Motion carried 6/0.

1049. It was moved by Gates and seconded by Fish to set the budget hearing for the 2021-22 budget

and the hearing for the 2020-21 budget amendment for Monday, April 12, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at the

Central Office. Motion carried 6/0.

First Reading of Board Policy 600 Series

The second and final reading will be done next month.

Karr Athletic Complex Athletic Building

1050. It was moved by Fish and seconded by Burke to allow Mr. Carolus to seek bids for the additional

building at the Karr athletic complex. Motion carried 6/0.

Legislative Update

Superintendent Koeppen gave an update on the legislature's recent work.

There were no audience comments on any of the preceding items.

Move into Exempt Session to Discuss Strategies as Allowed by Iowa Code 21.9

1051. It was moved by Van Steenhuyse and seconded by Timmermans to enter into exempt session at 8:53 p.m.

To Discuss negotiation strategies as allowed by Iowa Code 21.9. Motion carried 6/0 on a roll call vote.

By consensus, the board moved from exempt session to open session at 9:06 p.m.

Adjournment

Rob Levis adjourned the meeting at 9:06 p.m.
