Hawkins Memorial Library, La Porte City, is hosting the program: Autism…A New Word in Our Vocabulary, Forty Years…Then, Now and In the Future on Monday, April 13, at 9:30 AM. Hear Clarice and Robert Burkgren’s story of how autism has impacted their lives and that of their daughter, Beth. The Burkgren’s will share information on how far things have come and why so many more individuals are diagnosed with autism today.

In order to highlight the growing concern and awareness about autism, the Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community. National Autism Awareness Month represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.

Clarice will also be talking about her book; Autism, A New Word in Our Vocabulary and the 35 Year History of Iowa Society for Autistic Children and the Autism Society of Iowa. Please join us for this enlightening program at Hawkins Memorial Library, 308 Main Street, La Porte City.
