Vinton's Downtown made more beautiful with Flowers

The Cottage Garden Society along with help from the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department came up with a plan to make downtown Vinton bloom. Planters were added to the light poles in the downtown are where baskets were placed. Inside these are placed two semi-circles with flowers that have been grown and sent to Vinton. Around 50 pots and hanging baskets around the downtown area were filled with the flowers that are in full bloom now.

There will be no Outbound Email on Memorial Day

Have fun and stay safe on the water this summer

Iowa lakes and rivers will soon be busy with paddlers, boaters, swimmers and people wading to search for fossils, rocks and driftwood or to clean up litter.Rivers are dynamic systems that change with high flows and have obstacles hidden just beneath the water surface. Iowa rivers can have sudden drop-offs, holes, submerged shelves, foot holds and rock ledges.

Urbana Officially terminates Police Chief

The Urbana City Council voted to terminate the Police Chief, Joshua Baker. Baker had been on paid leave since April of 2024, just over a year ago. In a 3 to 2 vote, the council fired Baker without cause. Baker filed a lawsuit against the city, city clerk and mayor last June. The lawsuit claims there was an abuse of power by the mayor and city clerk and he is alleging that they had withheld his wages while launching an unwarranted investigation.

SACG upgrades Shellsburg's Pavilion with new Picnic Tables

The Shellsburg Area Community Group’s latest effort to bring an upgrade to the City Park was very successful. The goal was to replace the worn and unattractive picnic tables in the frequently used park pavilion. SACG's Parks Planning Committee undertook the task of researching, fund-raising, purchasing and assembling ten new tables. City officials gave approval for selecting tables made with recycled plastic.

4th St. Diner in Need of an upright Freezer ASAP

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Plant Sale Grows Over $8,500 for Ag Program

By: Co-Reporter, Abby McKennaThe Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter wrapped up a successful spring plant sale after three busy weekends in the high school greenhouse. With strong support from the greenhouse management class, students grew and sold a wide range of flowers, vegetables, hanging baskets, succulents, and even handmade wooden planter boxes built by Ag students.

35 Year Service Award: Tina Eden Virginia Gay Hospital proudly celebrated the commitment and dedication of its staff during the 2025 Annual Employee Awards Banquet, held at the Vinton Country Club on Wednesday evening. The event brought together staff, family, and leadership to recognize employees who have reached milestone anniversaries in their service to the hospital and community.
