2023 Iowa State Fair Winners (Part 1)

Andy Holthaus' State Fair Entry brings home a blue ribbon from the State Fair Iowa State Fair Exhibits & Communications Winners in the Communication entries:Working Exhibits7th Graders Nora and Jenna Grovert of the North Eden Willing Workers 4-H club received recognition for their submission promoting literacy. They designed magnetic bookmarks that are cute and functional and encourage reading at the Iowa State Fair. Ag & Natural Resources and ConservationAndy Holthaus a member of Polk 101 4-H, entered under Ag & Natural Resources and Conservation, Environment, and Sustainability, He received a blue ribbon for his 4' x 4' x 1' Farm Display.

Electric Pole hit along C Ave.

Vinton's electric crew has been working at the corner of C Ave. and 10th St. to replace a pole that had been hit. The pole was tilted just enough that crews saw a need to reset a new pole in the ground to correct the issues.Hats off to our guys who work on the ground and adjust the high voltage wires when we get them out of whack.  Tom Bodett has nothing on these guys.

Construction begins for new business along K Ave. and remodeling for another

For months the city has been anticipating the arrival of a new business. Located on the corner of K Ave. and West 9th St. (the former Braille School Property along Hwy. 218) Construction is now underway for the anticipated arrival of a new business in town. The property has been purchased by the Family Dollar/Dollar Tree company. A competition date has not been announced as of yet.

Secretary Naig Honors 16 Choose Iowa Coloring Calendar Contest Winners

Annual coloring calendar contest showcases student artists and Iowa agricultureIowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig recognized 16 Iowa students today whose artwork was selected for inclusion in the 2023-2024 Choose Iowa Coloring Calendar. The ceremony was held in the Agriculture Building during the 2023 Iowa State Fair."Choose Iowa is all about connecting consumers to the high-quality products that are grown, raised and made in Iowa,” said Secretary Naig.

First Christian Church Center Point Closed Sunday!

First Christian Church of Center Point will be closed on Sunday 20th August. In 1993, Rev John Caughron became pastor of FCC Center Point and served the church as Pastor until 2012, then in the next 8 years, did two more stints as interim pastor until, in 2020, he retired for the final time, and the church honored him with the title Pastor Emeritus for his constant presence and commitment to the church.

Fareway Stores Join with the Vinton Kiwanis to provide food to kids

Fareway is getting in on the fun for this year's Kiwanis 5K. For every cart full of groceries donated to the Operation Backpack Program for kids program, Fareway's own Ryan will be running the race while push a shopping cart through the race.When Ryan was a kid he went without a lot of food. It is a personal cause for him to help fight hunger in our community.

Dysart winner: Farmers & Singles Participate in State Fair Horseshoe Tournament

August 13, 2023Participants from around the country competed in the Open Singles and Farmers’ Championship divisions of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament held Thursday, August 10, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.The Fair hosts both Championship and Open Class competitions every Fair day. Division winners are crowned daily. All Horseshoe Pitching competitions take place on the clay courts just east of Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.

4-H does more than teach, it feeds the community!

Did you know that 4-H helps to feed the community? "Over the last three years, the Linn and Benton County 4-H programs have partnered to donate over 1300 pounds of poultry to the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP). 4-H and FFA youth take pride in donating locally-grown protein while exploring raising poultry as a hobby or an entry point to a career path.
