Vinton-Shellsburg Introduces Interim Elementary Principal Kent Ryan

Kyle Koeppen, Superintendent for Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District, announced that Kent Ryan, a recently retired educator with more than thirty years experience in education and more than a decade in administration, has been selected to serve as the interim principal at Tilford Elementary School for the second semester of this school year.

Remember the old movie, "You've got mail?" The Vinton post office found out last week that they had a ton of mail. Delivery of more than 2,300 packages arrived at the local post office from Amazon.The post office is now an Amazon Delivery Unit, which means the post office will be taking on some of the Amazon deliveries. Amazon delivered three truckloads of packages to the building.

IDOT plans to conduct a planning study on Hwy 150

Just when you thought Highway 150 was finally finished...it may not be. In a news release the IDOT said, "The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a virtual public information meeting to discuss a planning study on Iowa 150. The study area is a 28-mile corridor on Iowa 150 from just north of I-380 in Benton County, extending through Buchanan County to the south edge of Fayette County and its junction with Iowa 281 just south of Oelwein’s city limits.

Herbert G. Eddards arrested in Nebraska on crimes in Benton County

Deputies in Merrick County Nebraska, served a warrant in Clarks, Nebraska, over the New Year's weekend. Herbert G. Eddards, 44, who was residing in Clarks, is facing multiple charges which include sexual abuse of a child in the second degree, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, and lascivious.Eddards was residing in Clarks when served and was arrested without incident.

Let’s put an end to human trafficking

-There is a form of slavery taking place in Iowa right now. It’s called human trafficking, and it occurs when men, women, or children are forced to perform labor services or sexual acts. This horrific crime affects thousands of people across the U.S., and it can happen to anyone. The State of Iowa is taking steps to raise awareness about human trafficking and put an end to this danger, but we need your help.

Vinton-Shellsburg Exceeds at Holiday Fruit Sales

The members arrived eager to unload and sort fruit throughout the day. The FFA Officer Team and the Ag Business class spent the day in the animal learning lab working together to get all of the fruit quality checked and sorted so that orders could start to be sorted and set out for members to pick up and deliver in a timely manner.

Gov. Reynolds to deliver her Condition of the State Address

 Governor Kim Reynolds will deliver her annual Condition of the State Address on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.  from the House Chambers in the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.Iowa PBS will be providing a livestream online, and it can be watched on the Governor's YouTube and Facebook pages.

Winter Carnival a hit with area children

The is being fed some Last Thursday, area children celebrated a few days off from school. Parents and grandparents brought children to the Vinton Skate Center to get some of those wiggles out during their Christmas break. At only a quarter per game, the kids were able to race hot wheels, play hockey, shoot nerf guns at targets, "feed the pig" and enjoy the company of their friends.

Vinton Lions Club make awards for service

Lions Club celebrated members who received years of service awards at their Wednesday noon meeting. Jack Schlesselman, Benton County Lions Zone Chair, was at the meeting to present the awards. Congratulations to John Elwick, 25 years; Dennis Lausar, 20 years; Pat Lyons, 15 years and J.C. Fraker, 35 years. Not present: Roger Uthoff, 15 years; Lana Elwick, 10 years; and John Anderson, 45 years.
