VIRGINIA GAY HOSPITAL - October 20th, 2020 4:08 pm

The Sixth Annual Benton County Community Health & Wellness Fair was held recently as a series of drive-thru events at Virginia Gay Family Medical Clinics in Atkins, Urbana, Van Horne, and Vinton. Virginia Gay Hospital and Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation organize the event each year with the assistance and support of several area sponsors. Community participation was strong as a total of 500 bags filled with health and wellness information were distributed through the four communities.
FFA - October 20th, 2020 8:30 am

By: V-S FFA Co-Reporter, Josh WileyOn Saturday, September 26th, surrounding kids from Benton County gathered at the Benton County Fairgrounds to learn more about safety around agriculture. There were 10 stations, including fire safety, water safety, grain safety, animal safety, electric safety, skid loader safety, ATV safety, first aid, 911 calls as well as semi and tractor safety taught by local FFA chapters and community experts.
VINTON SHELLSBURG COMMUNITY SCHOOLS - October 17th, 2020 3:36 am
Beginning Monday, October 19 through Thursday, October 29, a portion of the Tilford east driveway will be paved. Due to the construction, our bus loading and unloading routines will need to be adjusted. Students will be dropped off directly in front of the main entrance in the morning, and parents should be aware that this could cause possible delays during morning drop-off.

On Monday, October 12, at approximately 6:34 a.m. Cedar Rapids Police Officer Jonathan McDowell struck a light pole in the median near E. 4th Street and S. 8th Avenue in Vinton. Officer McDowell was not injured, but the police vehicle sustained significant damage. The accident was investigated by the Vinton Police Department.McDowell is assigned as a School Resource Officer at a Cedar Rapids high school.

If you forgot that the Patriot Tour was arriving on Saturday, you had a reminder of its arrival, with the roar of all the bikes and the sirens that escorted the tour into town. Several bikers from around the area joined in the escort. Some from all over the Benton County area. The tour displayed all of their patriotically decorated vehicles on 4th St.

With more than 20 questions sent to the Auditor by the local Kiwanis club the Benton County Auditor Hayley Rippel took time out of her day to answer and educate the listeners about voting. She talked about how ballots are handled, the cost to send and return them ($1.20 each way) and many other details. Remember if you have an absentee ballot it MUST be postmarked on or before November 2nd.

Grants provided to support human services, tree replanting As many Iowans continue to recover from the severe damage caused by the August derecho, ITC Midwest is committing $75,000 in disaster relief funding to support communities and those impacted throughout its service territory. This fall, ITC Midwest is contributing to human service agencies that are providing direct assistance to benefit families in need, as well as tree replanting in the storm zone.

The Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation is taking this opportunity tothank the Vinton Fareway and Farmers Saving Bank & Trust for their efforts in raising funds and ensuring that everyone in Benton County has access to 3D mammography for early detection that saves lives.

On Saturday, the Patriot Tour Parade will be rolling into town. Vehicles will be on display on 4th St. between 1st and 2nd Ave. The street will be closed from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and the trucks arriving as part of the parade will be available for viewing from 1:00 until 4:30 p.m. Vinton was chosen to host the (www.thepatriottour.com) parade which honors veterans, police, fire, ambulance and first responders.
