Eastern Iowa Honor Flight announces 50th flight named for WWII veteran Mike Wilson Flight #50 to include 88 veterans and special guests On Wednesday, May 1, the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will launch Flight #50. Since the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight began operations in 2009, 49 flights have transported 4,418 veterans, along with their guardians to Washington, DC.

April 2024 Veteran of the Month

The Benton County Veterans Affairs office is pleased to announce that the Veteran of the Month of April is Urbana’s very own Dennis Henry. Dennis served in our Air Force from 1966 until 1970. He joined the Air Force to, “see the world”. Little did he know he would be seeing the states of Texas, Illinois, and North Dakota. He had plenty of opportunities to go elsewhere with his outstanding abilities to perform his job as a B52 mechanic, but chose to stay in North Dakota for his sweetheart, now wife Shirley.

New law closes gap in eligibility for veterans’ benefits

By KATHIE OBRADOVICH Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill Thursday that she said would help deliver services to military veterans and close a gap in eligibility for some Iowans with service-related disabilities.She signed House File 259 during a conference of county veterans affairs commissioners and leaders in Johnston. The bill addresses training and requirements for county commissioners, executive directors and administrators.

Benton-Canton Shellsburg Fire Department adds New Truck

Earlier this month the Benton-Canton Shellsburg Fire Department shared some exciting news, the addition of a new truck to its response fleet. The new Shellsburg 650 met its new home. The truck was built by Toyne in Breda, Iowa specifically for the needs of the department. The truck will be the department's mutual aid truck and will carry 300 more gallons of water for a total of 2,100 gallons.

Premature Dissemination

At Tuesday's Benton County Supervisor Meeting, the usual business was conducted according to the agenda. On the agenda was to simply "Review and approve IPIB Agreement." (IPIB=Iowa Public Information Board)There were a total of 10 complaints placed against the Board of Supervisors, and as a result, the draft of the agreement was presented to the board for approval.
