Former Vinon-Shellsburg Principal at Tilford Elementary, Jim Murray, was named Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year in 2017. In 2018, the school was named a National Blue Ribbon School Award winner under his leadership.

Urbana held a candidate forum with all of the candidates participating in a Q & A. The candidates include two mayoral candidates and four council candidates (for two open seats).

The Vinton Police Department has released the following statement concerning the death of a 20-month-old, on September 22, 2024. It reads as follows."The Vinton Police Department, in cooperation with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the Benton County Attorney's Office have arrested two individuals identified as Kaylee Morris (23), and Mason Morgan (24) in connection with a criminal investigation involving the death of a 20-month-old child.

Easton Lindeman was only 3 years old when he lost his fight against High-Risk Neuroblastoma. This is a form of cancer that attacks the adrenal glands, spinal column, and bone marrow.

On September 13, 2022, Shellsburg couple, Jeffrey Diveley, 65,and Stacy Diveley, 49, were first arrested on several crimes involving children. Records indicate that  he is currently serving a prison sentence, at the  Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville.

It’s been a busy and heartwarming week for the members of the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department. Once again, these 24 dedicated volunteers took time away from their jobs, families, and daily routines to visit local schools and teach elementary students the importance of fire safety.
