Sweet Taste of Victory for Cooks in Fair Honey Cooking Contest

Cindy Paulsen of Cedar Rapids was named the Overall Winner in the Foods Made With Honey competition, judged Friday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville won the Sweepstakes award. Quinn Harbison of Ames claimed the Reserve Sweepstakes award and was named Overall Winner in the youth classes of competition. Entries were judged on the best use of honey as the sole sweetener in each entry.

Day 1: VS students begin 2017-18 school year

VS alum Emily Hanson will teach Kindergarten at Shellsburg this year. Shellsburg 2nd grade teacher Dee Tobin helped students write introductory essays during the first day of school. Members of the Shellsburg American Legion Post 166 hoisted a brand new flag over the elementary school, as students lined up outside the building to begin the first day of classes.

DNR honors Hunter Education Instructor Ron Geiger for 30 years of teaching

Conservation Officers Ron Lane, left, and Pat Jorgensen, with Hunter Education Instructor Ron Geiger. Ron Geiger from Vinton Iowa was recently recognized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for his volunteer service to the Hunter Education Program. Ron has been voluntarily teaching Hunter Education classes for the Iowa DNR in Benton County for over 30 years.
