Benton County Fair seeks candidates for 2014 Queen

The Benton County Fair is looking for young women who are interested in serving as a representative of the fair by becoming the Benton County Fair Queen.  As a representative for the Benton County Fair, the queen will be asked to assist with various contests and activities during the county fair in July as well as helping with other promotional activities.

Earth Day: VSMS students clean up near school

VSMS students from Ms. Bliss's class spent part of Earth Day cleaning the area near the school. Ms. Bliss' 8th grade science students celebrated Earth Day on Tuesday by picking up trash on the school grounds. Finds of the day: a blow up pool toy (let us know if you lost one) and a used fire extinguisher!

Gettel to lead Iowa Braille and School for the Deaf

The Iowa Board of Regents announced today the selection of Steven J. Gettel to serve as Superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton. He is scheduled to begin his duties on August 1, 2014. Mr. Gettel currently serves as Superintendent of the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind, a position he has held since 2001.

Forest City alternative high school teacher to replace Davis at V-S

Kenneth Kasper has been selected as the new VSHS assistant principal. A Forest City alternative high school director with years of coaching experience and a background in science education will become the new high school assistant principal and alternative school director for Vinton-Shellsburg. Kenneth Kasper has been directing the Forest City alternative school. He also served for many years as a football and the head high school boys and girls track coach.

Woman of the Year: Marjorie Rouse

Marjorie Rouse reacts to being named the Vinton Women's Club 2014 Woman of the Year. Retired Vinton teacher Marjorie Rouse has been named the Vinton Women's Club 2014 Woman of the Year.  The Club surprised Marjorie, who also taught at Garrison and Brandon, with the honor on Tuesday evening during its annual spring dinner.  When asked on Wednesday morning for her thoughts about the honor, Marjorie was still feeling the excitement.

Shellsburg celebrates 'Memorial Park' designation; more projects planned

By Nancy Thorkildson After a lot of planning and hard work, the new park in Shellsburg is now clearly identified as Shellsburg Memorial Park. The Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG) organized two work days in the spring of 2011 where community volunteers cleaned up the area that we hoped would become a new city park. It was a lot of hard work, but thanks to the efforts of many, the area’s appearance was much improved.

Earth Day: VSHS communications class helps teach recycling

VSHS communication students have been promoting recycling with posters, articles and videos. The Vinton-Shellsburg High School communications class has been working on a project for Earth Day, which is today (April 22). We wanted to 'get the word out' about recycling and some of the work being done here at the high school. We wanted to reduce the amount of waste created during lunch. The answer was to recycle milk cartons (which most people have no idea can be recycled) and juice cups.

AmeriCorps helps DNR clean up after fire near Vinton; policy review continues

Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff and a dozen AmeriCorps members returned Thursday and Friday, April 17-18, to help landowners impacted from the April 11 fire north of Vinton, clean up the damage. The damage occurred when a prescribed fire on the Red Fox Wildlife Area in the process of being extinguished jumped to adjoining properties to the east and began burning parts of 160 acres.

VS artists earn top honors at Wamac Art Fair

Kyra Blix discusses her project with her father John Paul. Vinton-Shellsburg High School artists took top honors at the Wamac Art Fair Wednesday in Vinton. Teachers Ann Diedrichsen and Chris Juhl helped several students prepare a variety of projects for the judges. In addition to earning its fifth straight "Best of Show" in 3D, VS also earned the 2D Best of Show award.  Brittany Lovekin-Merrifield's dragon earned the 3D honor; Dalton Bonesteel earned the 2D honor with his large colored pencil self-portrait.
