Prom 2014: Grand March, dance and Post-prom at VSHS
Freshly-polished pickup trucks. Stretch limousines. Colors from black and white to camouflage and orange to everything in between.
These vehicles and prom dresses and tuxedos appeared in Vinton Saturday evening, at the high school as well as restaurants, stores and gas stations throughout the area as Vinton-Shellsburg students made their way to the 2014 Prom.

Vinton-area veterans are seeking help to raise money for a new memorial stone at Veterans Park.

Vinton-area care provider arrested for theft, forgery and identity theft
A 51-year-old Vinton woman has been arrested for a variety of felonies as part of an ongoing investigation into cases of fraud and theft by a care provider.
Deanna D. Seevell has been charged with the Class D felonies of second degree theft, identity theft (two counts), second degree fraudulent practices; and two aggravated misdemeanors, forgery and tampering with records.
VSHS band director honors seniors, presents awards at Extravaganza
Vinton-Shellsburg High School band director Nick Waymire said that while his first year of as a high school band director was nothing like he expected it to be, it was a great year and he is every excited about returning next year.
Waymire honored the senior band members and presented several awards during the Band Extragavanza earlier this week.

At a newspaper, you have more than one reporter and a lot of people in advertising.
Celebration Park to include new cedar sign along riverbank
Boaters who approach Vinton from the north on the Cedar River will see the "Vinton Landing" sign welcoming them at the new Celebration Park. Those at the park will see the other side of the sign, which will announce the name of the river.
Vinton Parks and Recreation personnel installed the sign on Thursday, and local artist Brian Parr will engrave the words on the sign.
Local girl's drawings honored at Jr. Duck Stamp Art Contest
Coralee Bodeker a 6th grade student who is part of the VS Homeschool group, entered the Iowa Jr. Duck Stamp Art Contest this past winter for the first time.
She drew a pair of Buffleheads on the Mississippi River in winter using colored pencils. She placed Second in her age group (4th-6th grade) and was part of the Iowa Jr. Duck Stamp Award Ceremony on Sunday, April 27th at the Neal Smith Federal Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City.
'Handicap This:' IBSSS families hear from cerebral palsy patient, caregiver
Mike Berkson worked his way through college, with honors.
Yet, when people see him, they often think he's invalid because of his appearance.
"They let my wheelchair define me," Berkson told an audience of about 75 people last weekend at the Iowa Braille School family weekend.
Twenty-six Iowa families with children with vision loss and/or other disabilities attended last weekend's event on the IBSSS campus.

VSEA to recognize retirees, honor awardees, during annual reception, May 14
Vinton-Shellsburg Retirees and award winners will be honored at a public reception Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Vinton-Shellsburg Administration Offices
The VS Education Association will sponsor the event.
